So if I am from Minnesota and I tint 50% front 50% sides then drive to Illinois which allows no tint on the front I can have my car towed or do they respect where the vehicle is registered?

It's based off where the car is registered.

It's just like the "front and rear" license plate issue that sometimes comes up. If you live in and register your car in a state that only requires a rear license plate and you drive through a state that requires front and rear license plates and are pulled over for say speeding, they can't cite you for not having both license plates.....because it is not a requirement in the state that issued them.

Objections to tinting in general: Your privacy and/or cooling is at the cost of driving safety. Tint impairs your vision out and prevents approaching drivers from sussing whether you are aware of them. It also makes it difficult for the driver behind you to see what you're seeing in order to anticipate problems.
