(My apologies. You would have to subscribe to WSJ in order to see the full story with the quote for yourself. Or sign up for 2 weeks free then cancel. Or stop by the library and check out the April 14, 2008 edition.)

"Wind has the potential to be ... twenty percent of U.S. electricity by 2030. Solar has the ability to be another 20% of electricity over time."

Robert Lukefahr, president of BP Alternative Energy, a unit of British petroleum giant BP PLC

Yeah, and I have the potential to be elected President in 2012, but that's not going to happen either. Nuclear power ought to be 50% of our electricity. We know now how to make that work. Good jobs building, maintaining, and operating the plants.

I agree that nuclear should be pursued, new plants should be built, older ones decommissioned, and coal plants should be replaced with nuclear plants. But I also think we need to aggressively pursue renewables.

My only concern with nuclear is what do we do with the waste?

Today, Synroc probably holds the greatest potential long term for dealing with nuclear waste.

I looked it up. It does seem like a viable option. I found the following section on Wikipedia:

"Problems with this method of disposing of radioactive waste include the fact that that the synroc still has to be stored, often underground. Even though the waste is held in a solid lattice and prevented from spreading, it is still radioactive and can have a negative effect on its surroundings."

It was interesting to read how it is created.

I equate nuclear power to hybrids. Nuclear might have to sustain us until renewables become a significant chunk of our power. HEVs and PHEVs are going to have to sustain us until EVs and ultimately, IMHO, hydrogen can sustain us.

Interesting. If you'd like to learn more about what BP is doing in the renewables sector, the CEO of BP Alternative Energy, Vivienne Cox, will be a keynote speaker this June at the Renewable Energy Finance Forum in New York City.

The Renewable Energy Finance Forum-Wall Street, held June 18-19, 2008, brings together financiers, investors, and renewable energy project developers to network, strike deals, and to learn how money is made in the industry. In addition to BP Alternative Energy's CEO, REFF-WS will feature more than 40 of the highest profile industry leaders to share their thoughts on the future of finance in the renewable energy industry. In short, it is a "must attend" event for anyone involved in the industry.

For more information, visit http://www.REFFWallStreet.com.

Looks like BP is also interested in biofuel.
