Red face Can't decide between prius I vs 03 civic H

Hey guys, in the lower areas of bc I see a few hybrids for sale. I see two I'm interested in:

Prius I (2001) 95000 KM for $17900

2003 Civic Hybrid 10000 KM for $21995

So as you can see both options are pretty attractive. I know people say priuses are reliable and such so I'm not worry about mechanical problems. I'm just wondering which is the better car? A lot of say the civic is more refined and quieter than the prius I. Then again the Prius I has a much better fuel economy display as well the ability to cruise in EV only mode. Then again isn't the civic the better highway cruiser? I wonder which car is more comfortable, then again I kind of like the cassete player that comes with the Prius... Hm hard choices hard choices

help me !!! anything on your mind about ^ can help me decide right now!

Forgot to add both are from dealers, the toyota one has a warrenty for 30 days while the honda not sure... and from what I can tell the honda one has been there for quite awhile so I wonder how's it battery... How can I tell if the dealship has been running the car 30 mins a week like the manual suggested?

.

i got around 20 km a liter when i drove a civic 5 spd using advanced hypermiler techniques
and now I drive a salvage nwh20 prius that gets almost to 25 km/l with 195,000 km to date.

That Prius is pricey! I've seen them go for more like $16,000 CDN and that was a while ago, and with less clicks. I'd still choose the Prius over the HCH, but not at that price.

ya it was pricey.. and that was a price drop from 21000! at least the civic is newer although i'm sure it will drop even more when 06's come out of the lot ;D

The North American Gen I Prius and the Gen I HCH are pretty much equivalent in terms of fuel economy, according to our site's trusty mileage database. So you can base your decision on all those intangibles like your cassette player, appearance - and perhaps most importantly, just how much you like the drive. Seriously, take them out for a spin and see which one grabs you more. Was the Civic manual or CVT?

Just a FYI. The civic can have a factory cassette added to it. So if you want the cassette you could always add the price a dealer would chage to install it to the pric eof the civic and see if it is close to the prius.

Like I said in the other thread. Drive them and see which one you like to drive. FE wise they are similar. They both have pros and cons.

For whatever it's worth I was in a similar dillema, but ended up buying an 03 HCH with 60K miles on it. I paid 14K. I am super happy I did. It seems that used prius' (OK Prii - whatever) are going for more simply b/c Toyota does more advertising on them and there's more buzz. As noted in other threads, the decision may come to whether you are doing highway driving or mainly city. If the HCH has been on the lot awhile, maybe wait for the 06's as the price should drop. Thenagain, that was my pretty much my strategy, but I just could not wait. It feels really nice to be getting 50 mpg and saving gas $ now instead of later.

For (about) $4K more, I'd buy the newer HCH. (I'd probably do the reverse, if it was a Prii instead of and HCH, even without the generation issue.)

Since they are used, when you decide on one, maybe you can get the dealer to "lease" you the one you choose for 30 days with the right to buy? If it has been sitting there for as long as you said, they may consider that to help cash flow and you get to decide if the battery's condition is good.

Hey, it can't hurt to ask.

i could wait for the new year

nah i doubt i'll buy it in the US

civics sold in canada are always AUTO (hybrids) no man hybrids here! although it would be nice...

although how do i KNOW if the battery is in good shape? I can't tell by looking at the gauges can I?

i could wait for the NEW HCH but that's 5 k's more out of my pocket! when i can get the same milage for less? Sure i will miss out the luxery features but that's not the point. I Just want a car to replace my coupe 04 civic since I got a family now and driving stick sux! (for those gonna whine about NO STICK WITH IT TILLLL YOU MASTER IT buddy after 30000 km i can do anything you ask me to do on a man tran) plus four doors would be nice... such a pain to put the baby back there all the time. I dunno I guess I can always wait but who knows.. what you want now may never appear ever again!

and yes a hybrid cuz i like the sexy mileage plus i want to chill when i'm in rush hour. not freaking out trying to get out of it.

I just quickly scanned the thread... just pointing out in case someone hasn't noticed, I believe we're talking in Canadian dollars.
