Default China Raises Gas Prices

Quote:
China, the world's second-biggest oil-consuming nation, unexpectedly raised gasoline and diesel prices by at least 17 percent and increased power tariffs to rein in energy use, potentially driving up inflation.

I wonder what a gallon of gas goes for (in $) in a Chinese metropolitan area?

Here in Kunming (SW China) most stations do not have big 'price' signs. I'm a bus&bike guy and keep forgetting to check this since the increase. However on TV I saw 6.28 RMB per liter. Equal to $USD 3.44/gallon, more or less.

Before the increase I saw long lines at the fuel stations, didn't know why. It turns out that since the refiners were losing $$ selling fuel at the old (controlled) price, they decided to refine less fuel. Production rates have apparently been increased.

It makes you wonder how China can sell for less than the Western World. We have been doing it longer?, why can we not do it for less! They buy in the same market, do they not? I guess they are not as greedy in China! H

China still has to pay market price to import oil, it's just that their citizens pay less for gas and diesel than we do. We could do the same thing if our government wanted to (further) subsidize oil. That would just mean that we would have to pay more in taxes on other things. I don't think the gas is taxed enough as it is. Anyway, do you really think our government should subsidize gas?

The federal tax on a gallon of gas is 18.4 cents per gallon. Some people think we should do away with that--at least temporarily (McCain, Clinton). It's not like we can suddenly stop building and maintaining roads. Is the gas tax now enough to cover this? If you stopped taxing or lower the tax on gas, that money still has to come from somewhere (other taxes). Why would you want to give people a false sense that gasoline is cheaper than what it really is? So people might still think that commuting in their SUV is way cheaper than what it really is?
