CNN Poll: Would you buy a hybrid car because of rising gas prices?
CNN's online poll question currently is: Would you buy a hybrid car because of rising gas prices?

Poll Results
They likely just added it, as results don't yet show. How do you think it will turn out? My guess: 25% Yes, 75% No

At 2000 votes, 65% say yes. Selection bias at its best.

Very true. Actually, we've got a lot of bias here. I'll revise to 45% considering the demographic at CNN.

We just had a similar poll on our intranet at work.
Here was the question
"If gas prices continue to rise and remain high would you consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle?"

Re: CNN Poll: Would you buy a hybrid car because of rising gas prices?
I purchased a Prius because I was tired of paying out of the nose for fuel, but that was months ago now. We didn't see these fuel prices coming on in December, when I purchased mine. This is one of those serendipitous things which comes along and you brush off your brow and say how smart we were to make that decision when we did.
It has been said:
Hybrid drivers come in 3 flavors, greenie, techie and cheapie. Pick any 2.

Re: CNN Poll: Would you buy a hybrid car because of rising gas prices?
I bought mine in Feb, when gas prices were slowly going up. I was expecting them to go much higher. When I bought my car gas was going for about $1.89/gal, today it's $2.27.
I bought mine because I do a lot of miles a minimum of 100 miles per day (sometimes closer to 200). With gas prices the way they've been it made sense.
I know for most people the "premium" paid for a hybrid isn't worth the savings in gas, but in my case the math worked out. I was getting 18 MPG in my old vehicle and now I'm getting 46.
So at that rate I was spending $4861.80 on gas in my old car and now I'll be spending $1620.60, on gas at $2.23/gal. So my Prius is saving me over $3000 a year, so that will more than make up for the $3000 more I paid for my Prius over a similar car. And actually for this purpose I'm comparing the Prius @ $20,000 to an equipped Corolla @ $17,000, however I do think the Prius is more actually more comparable to a Camry, Accord or other Mid-Sized car which would make it even closer in price.
Although I would not have been able to afford a $20,000 car if it did not get the mileage the Prius does.

Re: CNN Poll: Would you buy a hybrid car because of rising gas prices?
Using a slightly modified version of Douglas Thom's spreadsheet that he generously uploaded here, I've kept continuous records since buying the HAH. I see a gallon of gas costing $1.82 back in Feb, an mpg around 31 for around $.06 per mile for an early tank of fuel; a week ago, gas was $2.18 a gallon, but the cost per mile was still around $.06, thanks to a 36 mpg tank and hybrid technology. Something to think about.
