As a local radio guy calls them.. "Deer, the Dumb Meat"..
Does anyone have any anecdotal evidence about if deer tend to run in front of hybrids more because they can be 'running silent' down the roads? Or, would the tire road noise seem to be the bigger item in alerting deer (such as it is!) to the oncoming confrontation?
I've hit a deer (well, my wife did while driving my car). I can say from experience that noise is not the problem. Was in the middle of the day - tires were squealing, horn blowing, and the thing just stood there. Silence had no role in the poor deer's demise.
No its true. deer run out in front of hybrids more often than conventional auto's, but its not because of the noise, its because Deer are real big environmentalists and they are running out to say thank you for helping with the consevation of the environment!
I haven't had a deer do that yet, but it seems people will walk out in front of the car in a parking lot more with my HAH than with my Xterra. It happens when the car autostops like pulling up to a gas pump, approaching a stop sign, driving in a parking garage or in my neighborhood when people are walking down the street. I don't mean to sneak up on them, but if they are walking down the street facing the other direction and I drive by at 2-3 miles per hour, they look startled to see a car pass them.
I guess I'll have to give a little honk before passing them (like that won't startle them, ha ha ha ha).
