I've read many articles on renewable resources that could equal and surpass our current consumption. To me the problem still lies with the fact that we have a population problem. It's a topic everybody seems to miss, and the problem is only getting worse. Until that is addressed, we will always be taxing our resources more than the earth (or we) can replenish it.

'Tis true. Look around. Ever hear people complaing about the lack of people/cars out in the world? Nope, it's ALWAYS...wow, traffic was bad today, and look at those crowds at the supermarket/malls, etc.

Population has to come down, as the resources for 10 billion people ain't coming from this planet...

Default I'd Characterize it as "Consumption Per Capita"

The amount of people that can live on Earth at a sustainable level depends on the standard of living. The average American consumes about 150 times as much as an Indian. I see the problem less of population control and more as reduction of consumption per capita. The US population is growing only because of immigration (hot topic), Europe's is shrinking, although it might be stabilized from Muslim immigration (another hot topic).

I think the Wikipedia states that even with gasoline, it takes more energy to refine it than it produces.

In the long run, we are going to have to commute on less energy, use solid waste for recycling and fuel better, develop more alternative energy sources...

Maybe an american conumes that but it make little different how much we consume when it takes twice as long or 3 times as long to get there. Go to India and try getting anywhere there in a resonable amount of time. Bring lots of reading material, about 150 times the normal amount because you will need it while stuck in traffic.

I'm not suggesting Americans reduce their consumption 150-fold, but to moderate it, before the ecosystem collapses. I believe there is a way to do it without a radical lifestyle change.
