That would be the only way I could see it working, and you couldn't be too far from the next exit.

Re: Ever Wonder How Much Gas is Wasted by Speeders Passing Hypermilers?
HF... is as Delta points out. High Fuel.
Also, the HF did not come with a dummy light for fuel. So I had to go off the gauge. The gauge would only display correctly if I opened the gas cap and then reclosed (it would represurize).

Ironically, I almost always see the offending vehicle (usually an SUV) at the next light so it's nice to know their little show got them there SO much faster.
You would think that more people would slow down with gas prices as high as they are, but I guess it's just easier to complain then actually DO something to reduce consumption.

It's amazing how arrogant and pompous SUV and high-powered luxury car owners are. It's vomit inducing actually.
Every time I go to fill up, I see these soccer moms with their SUV's and no one in them with smirks on their faces. I laugh inside because they don't realize how stupid they look driving those ridiculously oversized piles and throwing away all that money.
I cry inside because I realize that their incredible arrogance, selfishness, and total uncaring attitudes will cause alot of grief for many others who don't deserve the burden. Too bad we can't send these clowns onto their own planet where they can wallow in their own waste.

Re: Ever Wonder How Much Gas is Wasted by Speeders Passing Hypermilers?
If you truly want to hypermile to save fuel, do it in such a way as to not increase fuel consumption in the other cars around you. By slowing traffic up and then by them having to accelerate to pass you, well... you're just adding to the problem. The cars that need to slow down then accelerate to pass you will burn much more fuel to do so than you'll save by driving under the posted speed limits. It would be hypocritical to think you're holding up traffic in the name of saving fuel.
Also, if you're out there hypermiling, and another driver wants to pass, why accelerate to try to "prove a point" when that other car tries to pass you? Let him! It's your choice to drive slow, just as it is his choice to move past you.
These acts are the reasons why John Q Public is annoyed at hybrid driving hypermilers. I'm a far cry from a hypermiler, but I certainly wouldn't want to taint the impression of hybrid vehicles or one's choice to hypermile by driving with such arrogance.

Uh....I'm in the right lane letting the 2-3 lanes to the left go freely by - so what's the obstruction you are talking about?.....I know - get on the internet and perputate myths that suit your POV regardless of the facts...seen tons of such posts on lauries hypermiling article at www.msnbc.com.
Sorry, I don't subscribe to it's better join speeders in breaking the law....2-3 decades ago, people at least came close to the speed limit because they respected the police. If someone insists on speeding faster to get around me, (1) I'm not that much of an obstruction, (2) it should be on their conscious - it's not on mine, (3) they think not speeding is "arrogant"?

We regularly have large, slow moving trucks on our streets and I'll follow them. Other times, we'll have earth moving equipment and I'll follow them. But sometimes, I'm alone on a divided, four-lane access road and will stay in the right hand lane with this sign:
With this neat, rotating text sign,"Go around 24-38 miles per hour", the following traffic smoothly passes and returns to my lane. They don't burn one extra joule of gas changing lanes and passing. . . . Happy?
I also take routes that avoid traffic:
So there we have it.
As for following traffic burning a lot of gas because I'm on the road, that is a darn, darn shame but not my problem. If they were driving a hybrid electric, they wouldn't burn one extra bit of gas. They CHOOSE to drive a fuel inefficient vehicle and the rest is their reward.
Now if they want to help me burn more gas, I would happy to take a $5 bill and follow their lead. Yes, for $5, I'll follow them and drive just like they do. Opps, I mean a $10 bill, yea, I'll do it for $10.

Re: Ever Wonder How Much Gas is Wasted by Speeders Passing Hypermilers?
I'm totally with Delta Flyer there. What makes one consider a hybrid driving at or just below the speed limit is an impediment, especially on a freeway? There is something much more wrong and unsafe about tailgaiting a sensible driver, followed by jackrabbiting around them. And then it is the foolish jackrabbit's own fault that his/her FE will be diminished by such aggression.
Further, it's lemmingish to say, 'Hey, everyone better keep up with traffic that is going 15mph over the legal limit. Oh, and when you hit the middle of the bridge, take a sharp right!'
Not trying to inflame things. I just share the concern about hard-to-shake myths regarding driver behavior and traffic flow.

I don't mind people who drive slow, I mind those that force other to drive slow. You can tell who they are when you go to pass and they speed up or when you pass them and they honk their horn and wave their hands all upset. To those, I just wave the birdie and I'm off.

so here's my take on this...........i am on a 4 lane highway, driving 60 in the right lane. the LIMIT is 65. a vehicle comes up behind me doing 70. all he really needs to do to get around is move over and keep his speed steady. instead, i can hear him push down the accelerator so i can hear his pipes, an obvious indication from his that he's not pleased with my speed, even though i am not in the passing lane and no longer "in his way". am i causing him to speed up or to waste that gas? no, he's doing it himself. i drive this road to work every day, and have never seen a backlog of cars behind me, nor a shortage of those who are already speeding when they pass me.
Best fill 66.7 MPG, best tank 801.5 miles
