Excellent design: AFS Trinity Power Corp

Now some of their write up sounds a little 'too good' but the idea of using a bank of ultracapacitors with the batteries makes a lot of sense. It isn't just LiON batteries that don't handle surge currents well. Using the ultracapacitors for the surge power demand with chemical batteries for energy storage is an excellent approach.

Re: Excellent design: AFS Trinity Power Corp
I wonder when it will be available for sale and how much it will cost. I did not see any such info on their web site, but I did not look for long.

I saw this:
"Li-ion battery technology has advanced dramatically over the past ten years, and this rate of advance is expected to continue, bringing it to a high stage of development by the year 2010, concurrent with the completion of development of the Extreme Hybrid™. "
Sounds like the Volt promise (hope), to me.

Re: Excellent design: AFS Trinity Power Corp
I met with them for some time, and have arranged a test drive. A few very big points:
1. This doesn't use technology that doesn't exist yet. Everything is there and works. The vehicle works and works the way it's supposed to.
2. This vehicle uses off the shelf parts. No specially designed parts, just parts that are available in bulk now.
3. The cost for an OEM to take this technology and integrate it into their vehicle build and sell it would be a price increase of about $8,500.
I've got a lot of their press materials, and will be taking a test drive of one of their converted vehicles in the very near future.
I was honestly stunned by what they've accomplished. The idea of using the ultracapacitors to lengthen battery life and to cause power to be "on demand", as well as the ability to shift between pure EV and Hybrid mode at the push of a button is pretty cool.

Pravus, looking forward to your review-- Do you know what their cost to convert an existing on the road vehicle like my 2005 FEH would be? or are there even plans for that?

Pravus,
I am looking forward to your review too (assuming that there will be one). I am guessing that you met with them at the NAIAS in Detroit, and that is where the test drive will be. Please confirm.

They are certainly getting a LOT of press coverage.
I found it interesting they used a mild hybrid Saturn Vue for their "Extreme Hybrid Makeover". Most PHEV conversions out there are for Priuses or Escapes.
Since PayPal founder Elon Musk sunk some of his personal wealth into Tesla, perhaps Belleue, Washington based AFS Trinity will hit up some of Microsoft's founders (Paul Allen, Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates) as investors and start doing conversions or building their own Extreme Hybrid vehicles. Imagine.
