Default An Excellent Way Detroit Could Have Introduced Hybrids

Police cars.

A recent thread explores cities evaluaing hybrids. Imagine the savings if there was a hybrid Crown Victoria for police departments? The same goes for Impala's or whatever the GM counterpart is.

I'm not about to suggest every police car should be a hybrid, but the typical patrol car should benefit greatly. An EV mode might be useful in sneaking up on suspects.

This would provide a wealth of experience. I wish Detroit had done this at least ten years ago....

Only if the police cruiser is built with power in mind! Can you imagine how many people would attempt to outrun a police car if they all accelerated like the Civics/Pruis?

I do, however, really like the hybrid taxi fleet. I feel that's a step in the right direction.

I wonder who else would benefit from using a hybrid vehicle? US Postal Service? Any other livery type services? US Military?

Speaking of military, I believe the Army is using a few fuel cell vehicles in their fleet now. They're doing a testing phase. I need to find that article and post it here.

Default Clarification: Patrol NOT Pusuit Vehicles

I'm NOT suggesting hybrids for State Troopers, CHIPs, or pursuit vehicles.

The patrol vehicles are what I had in mind. Maybe the technology is not quite here, but I envision a V8/V4 hybrid along the lines of the Honda Accord, only with a real hypermiling patrol mode. Even in my Insight, I could go fast when I wanted to.

In a lot of instances, patrolmen could radio for help if a suspect got into serious racing....

I'm just of the opinion many patrol cars don't go over 80mph that often...

Oh, I gotcha.

That would be especially beneficial for community patrols. In my, and neighboring cities, there aren't many "fast" roads. Police cruisers travel around in the 25 miles per hour neighborhoods most of the time. But even outside of the communities, the main roads are only 35-45 miles per hour. Some of the major thoroughfares are even only 50 miles per hour!

So yeah, a hybrid would do the trick!

And speaking of calling in for reinforcements when speeds are in excess... we had some knucklehead on a motorcycle in the middle of Phoenix on a highway that decided to outrun a cop. Yeah, he got away. But then a couple days later, he was back at it! He did this for several days within a two week period. Sometimes even riding up to a cruiser, flipping them the bird, then taking off! Well, the cops finally had it with this dude. They called in air support. Chopper followed him until he ditched the bike and tried to hide while on foot. He went to jail, of course...
