Re: Are Gas Prices Straining Your Budget?
Delta Flyer - Jeez. You always have good ideas for polls.
My wife and I, back when gas prices hit $2 a gallon, decided to ration ourselves by sticking to spending $240 a month in gas. (Which actually bought $250 worth because of prepaid card discounts of 4%)
We're still sticking to that $240 a month, but to do so obviously we've cut our driving down by 33%. ($240 used to buy 120 gallons, now it buys between 80 and 100.)
So, straining the budget? Nope. Straining my freedom? Somewhat!

Re: Are Gas Prices Straining Your Budget?
not so much as with my previous car. with my CRV i was having to fill up twice a week, through a combination of low mileage and a small tank. i was spending close to $300 per month on gas.
i haven't really filled my HCH enough to compare, however, that may be the comparison in itself. i have filled it three times since i got it on september 7th, but that included a trip that was about 500 miles round trip. so, i am thinking i am doing a lot better than i was.
Best fill 66.7 MPG, best tank 801.5 miles

so I buy fewer grande lattes, or we get pizza every other week instead of every week. Not an issue. Yet. Call again at $5/gal.

Re: Are Gas Prices Straining Your Budget?
As a general note, those online "media" polls are so blatantly biased I often feel horrible even participating. Many imply the "humane" answer. Some are stated so radically that most everyone rejects it, while others are presented so vaguely that everyone supports it. Then, of course, there are the ones in which one could agree with more than one choice (or none)!

Re: Are Gas Prices Straining Your Budget?
Funny thing is the CNN Quick Poll has almost the exact opposite result of this inhouse poll:
61.5mpg lifetime - 82mpg in recent months

- Hate to state the obvious, but that result is because most of those CNN voters are NOT hybrid owners !!

Revenge
A few months ago a member had a bad interview by a NYC Times reporter.
I was thinking, why not interview that reporter or someone like that at Time, CNN, Washington Post, etc....
I'd love to pin them down by getting them to say the expected condemnation of Bush's energy policy, we drive too many gas guzzlers.....but then to get them to suggest the solution. My hunch is a lot of these reporters say we waste energy, yet rule out realistic solutions such as hybrids. Also suspect that some wish everyone else use mass transit and bicycles (but them).

Re: Are Gas Prices Straining Your Budget?
Eh, I think I disagree with you there. Hybrids, at this point, don't usually save people money unless they drive a LOT. In addition, people who buy hybrids (so far) have been economically better off than those who don't. It's a decision made after taking into account much more than gas prices. Of course, we also have a small sample size here.

Hope this Clarifies
I agree that most hybrid driver are not looking strictly at their pocketbook.
Gut feeling about reporters that write on energy issues is they want something done, but hybrids are out of their comfort zone as a solution.
