Default Government Gas Plan

Big article in today's newspaper about the new Govt. gas plan having drivers pay by the mile Vs at the pump. You will have to have your vehicles installed with a memory card and GPS unit and pay by the distance traveled Vs by the gallon. It uses a card that you will have to down load the data on and pay the tax based on your mileage, and possibly type of vehicle New test base to be started in Oregon shortly.

This is as a result of Americans buying fuel saving vehicles (Hybrids, etc) and the states and Govt not taking in the needed highway funding needed to maintain the roads.

Another Tax that will lower the gas price and be more hidden as it's just another bill you'll have to pay...

It was in the local paper, front page. I looked for it for the link and can't find it on thier site. I'll keep looking and trying to get the link to post.

Just talked with the newspaper and they said they pulled it off the wire and wouldn't be posting it on their local site. I'll see if I can locate it. It was titled 'Gas plan has drivers paying by the mile' and written by Ledyard King Gannett News.

Found it with the help of the newspaper. Here is the link to the article;

The only thing I can find lately comes from the AZCentral.Com:

Antsy about gas tax hike, Congress considers charging by the mile

WASHINGTON - Instead of taxing you on every gallon of gas pumped into your vehicle, the government is considering charging you for every mile you drive.

Why? With fuel efficiency on the rise and more people buying cars that run on alternative fuels, states are worried the gas tax revenues that help pay for roads and mass transit will shrink.
Most of this is old news and has pretty much been debunked in most forums as unworkable.

At first skim, I'd reward, not penalize the more fuel-efficient vehicles. I'd tax the larger vehicles more, with tax breaks only if their size is required by business (i.e. tractor-trailer, landscape business, etc.)

Hi All:

___The last stats I saw was that the US on average is using ~ 1% more oil this year then last. Hybrid’s have not knocked down oil consumption at all so it is just another tax grab … Do you think the US and State Governments will remove their $0.30 - $0.35 or thereabouts on gasoline before they would implement the tax/mile plan? Not a chance … Oregon will probably be the first with the above and I can’t wait to see what happens there.

___Here in Chicago we have an interesting situation. The Illinois Toll Authority was supposed to remove the toll-booths about 10 years ago. Guess what we still drive through everyday and pay more at the booth now then before? If you pay by cash, your tolls are doubled as of a few months ago as well! Nice way to stick it to the out of staters … Funny thing is that the non-tolled Interstates in Illinois, I-55 and I-57 to name 2, are quite a bit nicer to drive on.

___Anyway, the extra monies collected by any tax plan sure as hell won’t be used to improve anything. As it stands, population growth has filled the coffers this year as well as last as well as the year before that and the year before that and … The monies collected are simply burned (here in Illinois anyway) w/ > $100,000 retirement pensions for some of the upper level state pensioners as another example of a state giveaway. A sad state of affairs for all of us Chicagoan’s indeed.

___Good Luck
