I read somewhere sometime back when those pin lights (tiny little bulbs) were popular and everywhere that it's also legal to get a ticket for having a burnt out light on just one of those, as well as a ticket for having them in some states.

Here the ground effect lights will get cops chating to you and none of the chat will be in your favor. Dosent matter the color of the lights.

BUT,,, On the wifes red peral 05 Accord I install two small red led's behind the grill and bumper cover. Wired them into the headlight low beam circut. Worked out great! When you turn on the headlights it throwns out a slight red glow from the grill. Looks good and dosent seem to draw the cops in.

With my Civic being silver I went with two blue led's for it. Wired them in the same way and they are working. Just havent put them in there permanet mounting place seeing it looks like the bumper cover has to come off for the horn upgrade. Well see if the blue led's get any cops sniffing around.

Im betting it wont.

Here's what it says in California's Vehicle Code:

Quote:
Lighting Requirements

25400. (a) Any vehicle may be equipped with a lamp or device on the exterior of the vehicle that emits a diffused nonglaring light of not more than 0.05 candela per square inch of area.

(b) Any diffused nonglaring light shall not display red to the front, but may display other colors. A diffused nonglaring light shall not resemble nor be installed within 12 inches or in such position as to interfere with the visibility or effectiveness of any required lamp, reflector, or other device upon the vehicle.

(c) A diffused nonglaring lamp or device, other than a display sign authorized by subdivision (d), shall be limited in size to an area of 720 square inches and where any lease, rental, or donation is involved the installation of the lamp or device shall be limited to those vehicles operated either primarily within business or residential districts or municipalities, or between business districts, residential districts, and municipalities in close proximity.

(d) An internally illuminated sign emitting not more than 0.25 candela per square inch and possessing copy which does not contain a white background may be displayed on each side, but not on the front or rear, of a trolley coach or of a bus being operated in urban or suburban service as described in Section 35107 of this code.

Amended Ch. 582, Stats. 1968. Effective July 16, 1968. Supersedes Ch. 144.
Basically you can have ANY COLOR neon lighting on the underside of your car, both while driving and parked, as long as a) it's not RED and b) the tubes are hidden.

Here's what the AutoI website has to say about the "no blue because it's for cops" assumption:

Quote:
Assumption - I know you can't have red facing forward or blue facing front or back.

FACT - A lot of officers are told that blue is their color, but when researching the vehicle code book, they have not been able to give a code number nor have we found a vehicle code that states blue is a police color, so they may be misinformed. Keep in mind it has to be in the vehicle code book to be a law... They just use it and everyone thinks that it is a police color... The vehicle code does state that only emergency vehicles may have RED facing the front. There is no mention of the color blue.

Assumption - Green is questionable since it is a Traffic Control Device color.

FACT - Just because a color is used on a traffic light doesn't mean it can't be used... look at RED or AMBER. Those are traffic light colors and are on all vehicles. There is nothing stating that green cannot be on a vehicle. RED cannot be used in the front but is perfectly legal on the sides and back when mounted correctly.

Here's what the AutoI website has to say about the "no blue because it's for cops" assumption:[/quote]

Here in Fla red & blue are not allowed!!
This includes neon and LED lighting

316.2397 Certain lights prohibited; exceptions.--

(1) No person shall drive or move or cause to be moved any vehicle or equipment upon any highway within this state with any lamp or device thereon showing or displaying a red or blue light visible from directly in front thereof except for certain vehicles hereinafter provided.

(2) It is expressly prohibited for any vehicle or equipment, except police vehicles, to show or display blue lights. However, vehicles owned, operated, or leased by the Department of Corrections may show or display blue lights when responding to emergencies. (Jail & Prison vehicles)

(3) Vehicles of the fire department and fire patrol, including vehicles of volunteer firefighters as permitted under s. 316.2398, vehicles of medical staff physicians or technicians of medical facilities licensed by the state as authorized under s. 316.2398, ambulances as authorized under this chapter, and buses and taxicabs as authorized under s. 316.2399 are permitted to show or display red lights. Vehicles of the fire department, fire patrol, police vehicles, and such ambulances and emergency vehicles of municipal and county departments, public service corporations operated by private corporations, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as are designated or authorized by their respective department or the chief of police of an incorporated city or any sheriff of any county are hereby authorized to operate emergency lights and sirens in an emergency. Wreckers, mosquito control fog and spray vehicles, and emergency vehicles of governmental departments or public service corporations may show or display amber lights when in actual operation or when a hazard exists provided they are not used going to and from the scene of operation or hazard without specific authorization of a law enforcement officer or law enforcement agency. Wreckers must use amber rotating or flashing lights while performing recoveries and loading on the roadside day or night, and may use such lights while towing a vehicle on wheel lifts, slings, or under reach if the operator of the wrecker deems such lights necessary. A flatbed, car carrier, or rollback may not use amber rotating or flashing lights when hauling a vehicle on the bed unless it creates a hazard to other motorists because of protruding objects. Further, escort vehicles may show or display amber lights when in the actual process of escorting overdimensioned equipment, material, or buildings as authorized by law. Vehicles of private watch, guard, or patrol agencies licensed pursuant to chapter 493 may show or display amber lights while patrolling condominium, cooperative, and private residential and business communities by which employed and which traverse public streets or highways.

(4) Road or street maintenance equipment, road or street maintenance vehicles, road service vehicles, refuse collection vehicles, petroleum tankers, and mail carrier vehicles may show or display amber lights when in operation or a hazard exists.

(5) Road maintenance and construction equipment and vehicles may display flashing white lights or flashing white strobe lights when in operation and where a hazard exists. Additionally, school buses and vehicles that are used to transport farm workers may display flashing white strobe lights.

(6) All lighting equipment heretofore referred to shall meet all requirements as set forth in s. 316.241.

(7) Flashing lights are prohibited on vehicles except as a means of indicating a right or left turn, to change lanes, or to indicate that the vehicle is lawfully stopped or disabled upon the highway or except that the lamps authorized in subsections (1), (2), (3), (4), and (9) and s. 316.235(5) are permitted to flash.

(8) Subsections (1) and (7) do not apply to police, fire, or authorized emergency vehicles while in the performance of their necessary duties.

(9) Flashing red lights may be used by emergency response vehicles of the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Health when responding to an emergency in the line of duty. (10) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.

I have seen two instances where persons with prohibited equipment get nailed.

1. girl in a honda with thos blue lights on the washer nozels on the hood , they wrote her a ticket and removed them on the road side.

2. a male teen with a blue neon light in his window the officer told him to turn it off and the kid got mouthy (hmm that never seems to work out well)
the officer removed the light and arrested the kid for impersonating an officer resisting arrest w/o violence & possession of a blue light..
I never saw that kid again lol..

The misconception is well they sell it in the store..??..
If its illegal why do they sel lit?
yes its legal to sell and buy and can be used on private property (home or car shows) malls are concidered private property "open to the public" and police can enforce all traffic laws on such proerties with the exception of privately owned streets/gated communities (unless the property owners sign a release letting poice enforce all traffic laws inside the community.

P.S. I would want Black Lights as they make fosferous items glow

One time I was driving home from Jersey (I live in nyc) and I got caught in one of the worst rain storms ever. It was at night and the rain was coming down so hard, I could literally NOT see the car that was five feet in front of me. I did see the neon liscence plate cover on the car in the right lane and a 20 feet ahead though. Astetics aside, since then I thought it was a very useful thing to have.

In nyc there is a specific law against blue lights fyi.

I wonder if the color indigo" is close enough to "purple" to not fall into an outlawed color category. I'd love to get indigo undercarriage lighting for my HCH

.

Hope is like a candle held against the night.
