Thanks so much to all of you that responded to my first posting. This time I am wondering if there are any of you out there (from DC/VA/NYC in particular) who own one hybrid, are interested in buying another, but are holding out for a wider range of models that suit your specific needs? In addition, we are looking for people who are heavy duty into the numbers; the savings, the mileage etc. For instance, is anyone a compulsive gauge reader?--compulsive in a good way!
I think that I qualify as compulsive. I dont use my AC and I wont allow my wife to drive because she cannot achieve the mileage that I do. I dont do anything great, but she cant even break 36mpg. I keep all reciepts and I am doing a cost analyses over a similarly equipped Honda Civic LX. I am in Nebraska if that matters.
R2-E2, 2G Prius.
Highway/City/Husband/Wife MPG: 56.5, as of 12/2005, 26K miles
Jac Nasser, Ford President: "We are planning to launch a hybrid version of
this car [P2000] within this year [1998]. We will also make FCEV available in
2004."
___Are you and your film crew interested in documenting a Prius II - world record distance on a single tank of fuel “Marathon” the first weekend of August near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania? If so, drop me an E-Mail as the details have already been completed. NPR will be airing a piece on “The Attempt” in their “Living on Earth” show this coming weekend if you were interested in hearing some of the details about what a group of 4 Valedictorian rated Hypermiler’s are attempting to perform. We have an alternate weekend setup for the last week in August if the weather does not cooperate.
___Another tidbit that you can read up on in regards to what we have planned is a story by our own Eric Powers at the following: Can A Prius Achieve 100 Mile Per Gallon?
Well, I keep as close an eye as possible on the instantaneous MPG in my HCH. I also constructed a spreadsheet that tracks total miles, total gallons, per-tankful MPG and average MPGs for all tankfuls, plus the standard deviation on average MPG. Is that compulsive enough for you?

Doesnt this kind of defeat the purpose of the hybrid as an environment saving machine? Why dont you guys try this during your daily commute or on a family vacation or something that is at least a bit practical. This just falls into recreational driving and you are wasting gas more than single occupant SUV drivers.
...most likely a donkey, but if he had to drive a car, i bet it would be a hybrid.

___Let me reply in kind and pose a question for you … We will consume ~ 12 gallons in the Prius II throughout the event, ~ 20 gallons for me to drive out and back, 10 for Rick, 6 for Dave, and 0 for Dan. 48 gallons of gasoline will be absolutely wasted. Now consider the Fuel saved when 500,000 or more viewers see the various techniques HBO Films has planned on shooting with Rick Reese behind the wheel of his Insight 5-speed, Dave Bassage behind the wheel of his Prius II, me behind the wheel of the non-hybrid Accord, along with coverage of Dan in particular as well as the rest of us taking segments in his Prius II during the event to shatter a few Prius II world record’s! I hope the light bulb just lit up? The answer? Possibly millions!
___If you want to see world records while commuting back and forth to work, hit the sig as even the record breakers had some or all miles completed while simply commuting.
___In regards to saving our environment, I believe you are driving a ULEV based HCH coming out of Omaha, NE, correct? The (2) Prius II’s and the Accord are PZEV’s so you will emit as much smog based emissions driving 1,000 miles then we will have over the 2,500 miles + combined. CO2 wise, consider what some of those viewers will do when they see a non-hybrid Accord receiving > 50 mpg (or as close to it as possible) while driving around town or out on the highway?
___Finally, let’s get started on improving your own tanks. The Membership here at GH as a whole can help in ways you may not have considered if you just ask … In another thread of course but we are all willing to help. Download the Hypermiling videos would be a great start as they include real world hypermiling views as they were performed live.
You may be looking at this as too much of a hypermiler...The normal person is going to see this as recreational driving. I think its pretty neat that you can do it, I just dont agree with the impact that it will have on the non hybrid community.
As far as my own vehicle goes, when I bought it, I would have had to wait 6-8 months for a prius, and pay more. I would have had to wait 3-4 for an insight, which would not work for me as I carpool with two others to work. We can not buy the pzev version of the civic here in nebraska. This left me with the choice of a civic hybrid or civic lx.
I do appreciate what this site has to offer. It seems to be very constructve. I have increased my own FE by taking some of the tips on this site. I was not trying to be destructive, just offer my pov.
