Honda Drivers: Have you Recaled Before You Knew it?

Generally I see it, but a couple of time, my Insight has recaled. For those unfamiliar with the term, it's when the computer determines the hybrid batter charge is too low, discharges the battery, then started the trickle charge, which generally takes about 20 minutes of highway driving to recover.

Last night was very strange, as I don't recall having stressed the battery pack that much. Just as strangely, I got a full charge in less than ten minutes!

Hi Delta_Flyer:

___A Recal is when the BCM loses track of what the SoC is. Not just when it’s low.

___I never had one in the Insight but I think you know how I drove her to avoid even coming close as the term and the experience scared the hell out of me … Not as a drivability issue by any means but as a pack longevity issue.

___Good Luck

Default It Happened Again

My recal software/firmware did what Wolfman didn't do at the D/FW meeting - dent my mpg. Had another one of those rapid recals. I'm going to start paying more attention to when this happens - esp. when driving on the ramps onto the freeway. I'm over 90,000 miles but it's strange that it happened twice in a week in cooler weather and hypermiling.

It was no suprize that it recaled several times on my two trips in Colorado, esp. on long climbs at 75mph on I25. My first two years I drove it harder and recals were more likely to happen. The most likely scenerio for a recal in Dallas is aggressive freeway driving on a 100-degree day with the A/C on, then get caught in stop-and-go traffic and the final nail-in-the coffin.

I'm a little fuzzy, don't think I've ever had one before - a recal involves the IMA draining itself completely once it's too low and then charging all the way back to 100%? So this isn't just the normal 30-70 swing when the IMA takes it upon itself to recharge back a little ways when the battery gets a bit low?
