Just heard on the news that HOV stickers will be issued for Hybrid/high mileage vehicles on the Long Island Expressway in New York. The cars must be EPA rated at or above 45 MPG, so only 3 cars quailify: Prius, Insight and Civic Hybrid.

So that'll cut 2.5 hours from Ronkonkoma down to about 2.4...

Much as I hate DC traffic, it beats the tar out of LI roads- although the survival techniques I learned up there serve me well. Not much can be done about it- some of the oldest roads and highways in the nation are on LI- lots of ancient low-speed cloverleafs with no acceleration zones. And lots of development preventing redesign.

At least the LIRR is good (was, in the 80s, at least) and goes everywhere.
