Yes, you can rev match and completely eliminate any shock. Before shifting into "N" it's best to let the tach settle to its lowest level, ensuring the transmission is in its highest ratio. Then, if you're keeping level speed, just rev back to where it was. To do that, you're using almost no additional fuel, it barely affects the instantaneous gauge at all -- it takes almost no throttle to spin the engien without any load on it. (likewise, idle in neutral takes very little fuel, the gauge indicates >150mpg even at fairly slow speeds)

On the HCH-1, Neutral coasting is still worthwhile because without the valve shutoff feature of the HCH-2, you get tons of engine braking when coasting in drive. Even though you don't use any gas, you are using up your momentum to pump a bunch of air through the intake and exhaust. In most situations, this amounts to more of a loss than the fuel consumption at idle. On the HCH-2 though you get the best of both worlds -- the ability to coast in gear with no fuel consumption, and minimal engine braking due to cylinder shutoff.

The model is based on the Japan-only 97-99 version of the Prius that looks very similar to the 2000-2003 version we got here, but much was changed to meet our more aggressive driving habits and the harsher climate. The Prius II has further changes that enable the engine-off condition to happen at a higher speed. The cutoff speed for the first gen (simulator) seems to be 27-28 miles per hour.

^ wow so your saying driving in the city streets in vancouver it must be 60% EV and 40% engine am I correct in the busy streets of coquitlam? When I'm driving aroudn there I barely go over 55 km/h.

.

i got around 20 km a liter when i drove a civic 5 spd using advanced hypermiler techniques
and now I drive a salvage nwh20 prius that gets almost to 25 km/l with 195,000 km to date.
