So I see reports on here of people driving like 1.5-2 hours each way to work and I find it hard to beleive. Then I wonder how many miles everyone is putting on the cars.
Now I drive 14 miles to work each way and my wife drives 11. I will qualify my statement by saying we do rent a lot of cars on the weekend to "run around in" and just try out for fun but we rarely put more than about 75 miles on thoes in a 3 day weekend.
I would think that I drive about 650-750 miles a month in both the cars, which would put the yearly miles at about 8000-10000 miles. How are people driving like 40K+ miles a year? I just cannot even fathom it.
I commute 10 miles each way per day and my wife walks from the bedroom, through the living room and into her office . She has only put about 2,000 miles on the MMH so far this year. I'll probably exceed my 10,000/year average this year in the HCH due to a long road trip, but I should still come in at less than 12,000 miles.
Commuter car, grocery getter, and summer road tripper--average 10k miles per year.
Winter road trips and ski trips, bad weather commuter and my wife's "daily" driver--expected average 4k miles per year.
My commute is 21 miles each way. My previous car had 140,000 miles on it in 11 years of ownership, so just under 13K per year.
So far, I think I'm accumulating more than that since now the wife takes MY car anytime she goes somewhere on the weekend. Can't understand why, she never took my clunker in the past.....
Of course, her weekend trips are also why my cumulative MPG on the database isn't over 40 yet.
My commute to work is 125-miles roundtrip, 5-days a week. Up until one and one-half year ago, for the previous almost 7-years, I drove 150-miles roundtrip, 5-days a week. It takes me 2-hours each way. I did most of my longer commute in a 2001 Hyunda Elantra (auto) that got 33-MPG. Just over 3-years ago, I decided to get a more fuel efficient car and give the Elantra to my mother-in-law, and I bought a 2005 Honda Civic HX (manual) that gets 44-MPG.
My Civic got rear-ended a couple weeks ago, and I finally got around to dropping it off to the collision center the night before last for an estimate. Since I had a meeting that day, I couldn't take my 2005 Kawasaki Ninja 250 that gets 70- to 75-MPG, so I got to take the FEH for the first time yesterday. The computer indicated 36.0-MPG on the morning commute, and I took a highway route for the afternoon commute, and arrived home with it displaying 33.1-MPG. Based on the computer being +/- 2-MPG on my first three fill-ups, I guess I got between 31- and 35-MPG that day. I am pleased with that for a 4WD vehicle.

Re: How many miles a year does everyone drive?
33 mile round trip 5 days per week, 17 mile round trip to church on Wednesday and Sunday. Occasional side trips for this, that, and the other.
I averaged about 13,000 miles per year in my 2001 Ford Taurus, so far in my HCHII I am projecting 12,700 this year.
A bit over 16,000 miles on the HCH last year, and I have a 5 mile round-trip commute to my office. Unfortunately I only work out of my office one or two days per week.
About a millon to 1.2 million miles before needing a major over haul. That is if it's properly maintained. Then another 500,000 miles or so after that. At 100,000 miles a year it's possible to go 15 years. Not too many of these trucks running around. Check in Mexico. And Texas if they open up the border to these old smoky trucks. So much for clean air if that happens.
