Hybrid Diesels
What do you think about hybrid diesels?
Diesels are much more efficient than gas cars, usually they need 30% 40% less fuel. Modern diesels also have less CO2 emissions and the NOx problem its solved. I have a 1998 320d BMW and I get 50/60 mpg. With hybrid technology applied to diesels we can achieve a greater economy.
In 2007 Citroen is expecting to launch the C4 diesel hybrid with more than 80 mpg.

Re: Hybrid Diesels
I'd get one. If I got my hippie on, I could convert it to bio-diesel and be the smugest ****er on the block.

Re: Hybrid Diesels
I always thought diesel engines needed to run longer and that the frequent starting and stopping of them wasn't good for them.
What are your views?

Re: Hybrid Diesels
What do you mean "the NOX problem is solved"? If it were solved, VW wouldn't be barred from selling TDI's in 10 states already for being unable to comply with NOX regulations.

Re: Hybrid Diesels
You have obviously not heard of Mercedes' BluTec system. It brings NOx down to gasoline engine levels.
smart may build a fortwo cdi hybrid. There is already a prototype, and the average fuel consumption is under 3 L/100 km, which is 0.5 L/100 km better than the pure cdi diesel.

The problem is solved in the theortical sense but not necessarily implemented in current vehicles. The solution is fairly simple, recirculate some portion of the exhaust back into the intake. The reduced O(2) lowers the combusion temperature and solves the NO(X) problem.

Where are you getting your figures from?
I'm a member over at the TDI club, and a participant on thier mileage competition.
A few TDI's are achieving +60MPG but normally get the same as the average Civic or Prius.
Some of the TDI's are exceeding 700, and a few over 800 miles to the tank, but is not due to superior efficiency.
They have a 16-21 gallon tank.

Do you have any references for us to research on this?
Efficient drivers do it better.
1003 miles a tank personal record. 74MPG calculated. HCH1 CVT

Re: Hybrid Diesels
All modern common rail diesels such as the smart cdi (that I have) already use EGR, and have oxidation catalysts, but that alone does not solve the NOx problem. It reduces it, but the Mercedes-Benz BluTec system will bring it totally under control.

Re: Hybrid Diesels
That reminds me, if I had a one hour commute, my average US MPG would be at or above 70, even with the top down.
Luckily I don't.
BTW, I expect the B-Class Mercedes (available in Canada at the moment, not USA) to come with BluTec by the 2008 model year, and if the B CDI does come into our market, I'll be buying one for sure.

How big/heavy is a BMW 320 d?
50-60 mpg is great.How big/heavy is the 320 d?
We are definitely getting a big dose of "grass is greener" in respect to Diesels-especially GM diesels. Apparently GM has lots of high tech Diesel cars in Europe that get great mpg. The Zafira-discussed in another thread-is like a stubby minivan.Same length as a Prius-175 inches-but 4" taller and about 4" wider, and it is apparently can carry 7 passengers. I would like something like that for my upcoming road trip. The Prius will be a bit small for 2 adults,a greyhound,a kitten,a MTB, and lots of other stuff. We sleep in the back on the fly, so a big tall area behind the front seat is nice. This Zafira "beat' the Prius-mpg wise- at highway speeds according to a German rag.
The also have a Corsa-Fit,Yaris sized, but getting 50 mpg with a Diesel.
We get the POS Aveo, they get a high tech 50 mpg car??WTF?? Thanks,Charlie
PS Being a true American, I would love for the Prius to be about 8"longer and 3" taller. It is wide enough now for 2 across seating, so it can keep the same width.Give me a hatchback Camry Hybrid!!
