The government should have hybrid fleets to save money. It is the smart thing to do right now.

Import cars in a government or large American businesses fleet is a big no no. They'll have to wait until vehicles like the Malibu hybrid come out and are able to be produced in sufficient quantity.

Sadly I think the country will be in trouble if we have to wait for 'domestic' multinational corporations to manufacture a fuel efficient hybrid. Whatever is available is fine as long as it does what it's supposed to. If the domestics can make something decent, great... but why wait for them? If they aren't competitive too bad!

What they need to do is make hybrid military vehicles - hybrid Humvee's for instance

.

61.5mpg lifetime - 82mpg in recent months

Here's a 7 year old article about a stealthy hybrid Humvee. Twenty mile stealth mode in a Humvee, hmm.

And here's an article from this year about the hybrid powertain in development for military vehicles (Humvees, Jeeps, etc). You've probably seen this before.

I work for a government agency and we have 4 or 5 HCH CVT's in our fleet and one Prius I. All other vehicles in the fleet are american made. I work for the County of Santa Barbara as a real estate appraiser for the assessor's office and when I check out a car to do some field work I usually end up with one of our Saturns that get about 33 mpg, but about 20 percent of the time, I get one of the hybrids and get between 43 to 49 mpg on them. All of my co-workers prefer the HCH to any other cars in the fleet, but it may have more to do with the fact that they are the only ones with cd players rather than the better FE.

That is hillarious! Hey, at least you're honest about it, plus it's cool to hear from another fleet individual that they're getting fuel economy at least in the general range of the EPA numbers.
