Default Hybrid - Fed Tax and State Tax deduction

I just found out after being told that their were tax deductions for Hybrids. I bought a Certified Used 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid only to find out now I don't qualify for Federal or State deduction because you have to buy it new. I think if you buy a Hybrid new or used you should get a deduction or credit because you are still helping the environment. So the original owner gets all the benefits even if they brought the car back after awhile and traded it in. My HCH is still under 36000 mi warranty. The Gov't bites on this and didn't make it fair.

The deduction was to increase the amount of hybrids on the road. Hence, only for new vehicles. If you buy a used model, it doesn't add another hybrid to the mix. It's a way to influence growth. (my ECON 312 class is finally paying off).

But I do agree; this incentive should be open to both new and used.

Since you're in CO, maybe it would be worthwhile to sell the '04 HCH and buy a new Prius? Sheesh! What is it now, $6500 in credits/deductions for that car in your state?

The credit/deduction can be obtained on a used vehicle but with a catch. The original owner cannot have claimed it once already. You may want to check if the original owner already got the credit. If so, trading it may not be such a bad idea if it doesn't end up costing you too much.

Dealership they don't know if the previous owner took the credit or not. It was registered in Virginia originally thru a Car Rental agency. Dealership says I can't get that info because of privacy act. So how would I prove if they got the credit or not?

You could always claim it and see what happens. Or call the IRS and ask.

I'd call and ask first, I know you have to provide prove of it never being claimed.
