If I was not hypermiling, I would have gotten a couple of tickets. First, a trip from Dallas to Larmie Wyoming some years ago. I just made it on two tanks of gas in my 1988 CRX HF. It was a good thing because Hwy 287 out of Colorado goes downhill - very easy to speed. Wyoming state troopers were busy "greeting" visitors.
This morning I had to turn back home to get something at 6:15am. I noticed a patrolman tailing me for no obvious reason (to me). I changed lanes to entice him to go ahead and pull me over, which he did (I hate these drawn-out affairs...). I did not get a ticket.
The incident is my reason against going the pack speed above the posted speed limit. There is a two lane access road along the interstate. The ramp is short. I was in the passing lane on the access trying to get on the ramp, but the cars in front and behind me we going nearly freeway speed - people in Dallas pretent the access road is part of the freeway all the time.

Anyway, I got between these two cars abruptly, then onto the ramp rather aggressively. The patrolman had a problem with that. If I wanted to risk a ticket, I'd argue yes that was bad driving, but what about people that pretend the access road is the freeway?
In places like Dallas, it's very common for people to respond in kind to agressive driving like I did. Traffic was light and it was early am - he had time on his hands to pull people over. Durning rush hour, drivers are doing what I was stopped over for all over the place.
My reasoning is if I had not been hypermiling, my entire commute would have been like my questionable ramp entry, and I would have gotten a ticket.
