Default ICE and the PHEV

Does anyone know if the ICE on a PHEV will be required to warm up before EV use like the HEV are in the US?

My understanding is 'no'. The early plug-in tests used the "EV" mode built into the Prius and an additional battery pack. I have not tested it but my understanding is the "EV" mode does not require a warmed up ICE.

And I sure wish Ford would negotiate with the EPA and be allowed to develop and deliver a software change that would enable immediate EV mode at key turn on if SoC was sufficient. Then the mandated warm up cycle could commence at ICE lightoff when SoC dropped to the predetermined cutoff value (~40% for the Ford Hybrid)

I really believe that in a few short years we will see significant advancements in PHEV as well as standard hybrid technology that will make our current models look archaic.

I agree. And, I am at peace with it. The investments we made early in the technology will fund the R&D to make those advancements a reality.

Me too. I think the big advances in the near term will come in power storage and motor/generator technology. Storage will come via some conbination of ultra/super capacitors and improved batterys, probably air batteries. As for motors, some industries are now getting large printed circuit motors up into the horsepower range that would support a motor/generator on each wheel.

The two technologies, when combined in a full hybrid, would eliminate the weight penalty and rigid design requirements of an all mechanical drive train. In turn, that would permit lighter weight chassis that don't require structure for transmission of mechanical forces. Brakes would also be lighter as they will be almost fully dynamic and a part of the drive train. Resistive brakes will be relegated to the emergency brake role.

From my point of veiw I am very happy with my current hybrid. The future looks bright but what we have right now is revolutionary.

I saw an show on the Discovery Channel (I think) about the Japaneese supercar, eight wheels with a motor in each one. Very fast.

I am not sure, but I think the name of the car was Alicia.
