I think I need space WAY more often than I need that little extra edge of speed- the time you save by speeding isn't nearly as much as people think it is.
A little math demonstrates my point. When you're driving at a rate near 60 mph (a mile per minute), and doing 5+, you save five minutes for every hour you drive, so you have to be driving for three straight hours to save a mere 15 minutes compared to someone doing the speed limit, even assuming no stoplights which let the slow drivers catch up to you while you sit and wait. At highway (65+) speeds, speeding saves you even less time, since the faster traffic is going when you speed, the less of a difference it makes, because the people driving the limit will be less than a minute per mph behind you.
The case for speeding looks better though when you consider the actual fuel cost/time saved in a small aerodynamic vehicle. Let's say a hybrid vehicle gets 60mpg at 55mph, and 45mpg at 75mph. (I suspect real world numbers are closer than that) That works out to about 1.2 gallons per hour of time saved, which even with gas at $3.40 for me is only about $4/hour. With four people in the vehicle, marginal cost of speeding is $1/hour/person. Going faster than that may be worth it on fuel cost alone, but exceeding 80mph dramatically increases chances of receiving a ticket equalling several months worth of fuel cost.
Note: if you have not already guessed, I voted for speeding in a small car

My logic was much like Double-Trinity's. I live in Phoenix, and as you can guess, weekend trips to Santa Barbara and San Diego are the norm once the weather gets hot and crappy here. My Civic HX can get better fuel economy at 100mph than a Ford Explorer could get even at 40mph, but of course I can't go 100mph on public roads. Still, if I could, it would make the 500 miles or so to Santa Barbara a lot easier to pull off after leaving work.
500 miles @ 70mph average = 7.1 hours. That means leaving at 5pm would result in getting there after midnight. Now actually my HX can get as high as 120mph before the speed limiter kicks in but lets say I average 100mph. Now we just cut two hours off the trip and I pull into the hotel parking lot by 10pm and have a lot more time to get settled and a good night's sleep. When you're doing just a weekend getaway with your significant other, an extra 4 hours of vacation time rather than drive time is a BIG deal!

Depends on how reliable I wanted my vehicle to be. On the other hand, a Nissan 350Z has a documented top speed of 150mph, stock, and is EPA rated at 19/25mpg. As sports cars go, to have a combined average in the low 20's isn't bad at all. Given a choice between a 16mpg Tahoe that tops out at 110mph or a 22mpg 350Z that tops out at 150mph, I think the Z would be a much more enjoyable car. I got to drive my friend's 350Z a while back and it's quite comfortable - the interior is kind of like having the front 2 seats of a Nissan Altima.

If i was given my way?
I would dump a whole barrel of oil on top of the genuiuses who decided years and years ago it was better to get 3rd world nations to hate our guts so that we can continue to drive cars that get 8 miles per gallon.
