The Prius approach is a 12 VDC operated AC compressor. The 12 VDC system is powered from the inverter from the traction battery. Thus the only time the ICE runs is when the traction battery level falls low enough.

As for BAS systems versus none, BAS is less bad. IMHO it is a bass-awkward solution but something is better than nothing.

If you are talking about 2004 or later Prius, it uses HV battery to drive the AC compressor.
