Default knee surgery, miss my honda

i had knee replacement surgery on april 4th, and i am doing quite well as far as my recovery. i was driving 10 days after the surgery, can just about do away with the cane, and am getting close to getting my mobility to where it needs to be.

the fly in the ointment? i have to drive our truck because i can't yet negotiate the clutch in my car. it's sitting in the garage hating me.....i haven't gone back to work yet, so i haven't had the bite of commuting with the truck, so hoping that by the time my PT is done i will be able to drive my car again......i miss it........

Oh wow, I'm sorry. I would die if I couldn't drive my car. Good luck on your recovery.

laurie,

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

It might happen to me later on, since I snapped my right ACL ligament eight years ago from skiing way too fast for the conditions....

Congratulations on being on the "healing side" of knee woes. I know it's a long road, but you sound like you're taking it in stride. I had physical therapy with several knee replacement patients last year during my own recovery/PT from ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair and partial meniscus removal. Happily, I've been as good as new for many months now (my surgery was February 4, 2005).

You'll be back driving your favorite car soon, and doing all the other things your knee won't let you comfortably/safely do right now very soon, as well.

All the best!

Memories... the inaugural post in my 'knee journal', chronicling my own knee surgery, rehab/recovery.

Laurie - my best wishes for your continued speedy recovery.

I noted your date of surgery - keep in mind that Honda recommends that IMA-equipped cars be driven for about 30min once every 30 days, minimum, in order to keep the battery in peak condition. In my Accord and Civic, it was on an underhood label. If yours has that same label, you may want to have someone consider driving the car for a few minutes for you in the next week or so.

In an extreme pinch, and I'm not advising that you *should* do this, but merely that you *could* - you can shift the transmission without the clutch, being that it's fully synchronized. However, you need to know the RPM ranges for each of the gears, else it will grind (if it does, back off a bit and lower / raise your speed so that it pops into the next gear). I used to do this for fun in my '88 CRX, 'just because I could' - not that I ever had problems with my clutch. It can be useful if you ever lose your clutch, in an emergency. 1st (from a stop) and Reverse especially are pretty much impossible to do this with.

Obviously, the best thing to do is have someone else drive the car for you - in this case, I'd say 'don't worry' about the tank average - we'll grant you 'special dispensation' this time

mark, thanks for bringing that up. i think i had read that on here, but forgotten about it. when it comes up on 30 days i will see how i feel. if i can't quite manage to drive it, i will let hubby drive us into town. however......i will be in the passenger's seat, ready to whack him with my cane the minute the mileage drops

You'll do terrific. If you need support, do pop in to the wonderful Kneeboard -- that forum kept me sane when I needed support/encouragement/information from fellow knee patients. I have no ties to the forum, other than having been an active poster during my own 'knee woes'. I still pop in from time to time, under the same screen name I use here.

Take it one day at a time and measure your progress in weeks, not days -- the little changes are easier to spot, appreciate and celebrate when viewed in the time scale of a week. Celebrate your successes, even if it's just something you'd once have taken for granted.
