Default Lithium Ion Sulphur Battery?

I read somewhere on this forum that there has been a Lithium Ion Sulphur battery ?? produced that will revolutionise the electric car industry.

Something about holding more than 4 times the charge of a standard Lithium Ion battery...per kilo of weight. I think that one of the companies was Sion.

Is this really true?

They were quoting huge mileages - 500 - 1,000 miles on one charge, and cheaper to produce than standard batteries and so on.

Obviously if this is true Hybrids will become a thing of the past very quickly. As I understand it a pure electric motor vehicle would be cheaper to build, less expensive to run, and not be dependent on fossil fuels.

Personally I would have rather purchased an all electric car, but they are hard to find and just don't have the range...in Australia anyway.

After having read so many threads on this forum you'll forgive me if I'm a little sceptical.

No doubt you will have the answer for me Bob!

(apologies in advance for any spelling mistakes)

I haven't heard of that variant. But I have heard of some other type (using manganese or magnesium, maybe?) That version didn't have quite as high an energy density as regular LiIon, but it had a very fast recharge/discharge rate (which would make it great for hybrids.)

Not in this case and I remain skeptical. I'm an advocate of air-metal batteries.

GOOD LUCK!

This link discusses the possibility of using LiS in automotive uses:

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ecotech/lis3.htm

Both Polyplus and Sion have hit the high energy targets, but have since been struggling to cope with safety (such as nail-pierce test) and longevity (cycle life) issues.

If they managed to achieve the safety / cycle life of A123 or Valence etc that would put an end to this "gasoline" stuff.

There is a nice interview with some SION people here:

Is the battery actually ready now?

This is very interesting and promising.

If the claims of PolyPlus are true...well I think we'll all be driving pure electric cars sooner than was previously thought.

Somebody call them and see if it's for real please.

It's a bit expensive calling from Australia.
