lsorense,

Hopefully in 2-3 years there will be a turbo diesel/hybrid option - a small sedan could definitely get 75mpg.

.

61.5mpg lifetime - 82mpg in recent months

I'm sure this was true on the day it was posted but right now diesel is a lot cheaper than gas. Where I live gas is about $3.25 a gallon and diesel is $2.65 or so.

I think it depends what's driving gasoline prices. The current situation is somewhat of an anomaly so I wouldn't count on diesel being cheaper from now on. When high crude oil prices are driving up gasoline prices, diesel will go up as well.

Based on what I've seen, Volkswagon cars are very poor in terms of reliability. See http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/Ar...=39115&IsPgd=0

Many people at Drive are complaining about it. Apparently in Australia, Volkwagon is perceived as a premium brand. In Europe most people know VW is a budget brand.

Well I certainly won't claim VW has top quality, but they aren't too bad either. They do make some dumb mistakes on new models that seem to take a bit of time to resolve, but they do tend to get them resolved and will fix them. Would be nice if they didn't make the dumb mistakes in the first place.

Now your chart there seems to be for just the first 5 months. Well what about 2 years or 5 years? 10 years? And what is a fault? Did the brakes fail or is your door handle slightly crooked?

Now of course being in north america I get to see what the big 3 makers here come out with, and suddenly VW quality doesn't look so bad. There are reasons very few north american cars are ever sold in the rest of the world. It isn't just because they are too big and inefficient.

Quality certainly is an issue with many cars, since everyone always seems to be trying to save money somewhere on the design in order to increase their profits or make their cars more competitive with some other brand that cut more corners. Sometimes they get away with it, and other times the corners they cut go too far.

As for where VW fits as a brand, I think europe might consider it a mid level brand, with audi taking the high end and skoda the low end of the VAG brands. What person at VW thought the VW Pheaton was a good idea I can't imagine, but I don't think there is anywhere in the world that considers VW a brand worthy of a car with that price tag.
