We only have a small glimpse into what diesel can do for us in the USA. The selection in europe is huge. Once we see that selection here, I don't see diesel being a hard sell.

Not bashing, just saying that there is not much of an advantage. Most of that is due to CARB. They HATE Diesel.

Diesel is great. It has more energy than gasoline. It's a great use of the sludge after Gasoline distillation. It's cheaper to make which equals bigger profits. It's cheaper in term of gallons per mile which makes it more attractive which equals bigger profits. We get about 20 gallons of gasoline per barrel versus about 7 gallons diesel: More diesel = more barrels = more profits. And hey, if we run out of corn, we can use up the soybeans. Ah... the ways to consume are limitless.

I'm curious why people don't say about 2007 model diesels in the USA.
They can't sell diesel cars unless it is certified as a clean diesel.
No 2007 VW diesel car is listed on their catalogue.

It is just a matter of time for diesel engines to come to the US. Corn based biofuel is a joke, can't wait for somebody to perfect soy/algae based biodiesel.

California mandated ultra low sulfer diesel fuel and much tougher emissions requirements for diesel cars. VW and other diesel car makers had to redesign their diesel engines to meet the new standards. We should start seeing the new diesels in the 2008 model year.

I own both a 2000 Insight and a 2004 VW Golf TDI. They are both great cars and I would buy another of either of them. They are both listed on the mileage database under sno779......Louis

I drove four VW Jetta TDIs in a row until 2 years ago when I gave up and bought a Corolla. Here were my reasons.
My last Jetta had the new pump and more powerful engine but dropped considerably in mileage. It also started having problems at 40K miles and that scared me.
The oil changes were very expensive. About $120 in Canada about the equivalent of $100US. That negated a lot of the fuel savings.
The seats were incredibly hard and I could never get comfortable.
I didn't like the new Jetta coming out.
My wife could never get used to the diesel smell and was uncomfortable in my car because of it.
Diesel started being more expensive than regular gas 2 years ago. It's about the same now as far as I know.

My Corolla ran for 110K miles with only front brake pads, no repairs, just regular oil and fluid changes. I just traded it in for a TCH and I am getting the same mileage as the TDI Jetta for a much larger and comfortable car. It also will only require normal oil changes at $35CDN.

I drive about 45K miles per year.
Hope this helps.

I actually had 2 TDI's. Both had timing belts.

When I bought them the price of Diesel was $.40 cheaper than gas. Now its on average with premium and higher. When I can spend the same amount for a gas vehicle, pay less for fuel and get the same or better economy, its a no brainer.

And BTW, I would not run B100 through a VW TDI. You will destroy the diesel pump. There is not enough lubrication. And at $1k for the pump, the savings goes away quickly.

IF you are really looking into a diesel. Get an old Mercedes. They run anything including SWVO (Straight Waste Veggie Oil) Just don't get caught not paying the man for the road tax!
