Question Manufacturer over-torquing oil filter.

-Both of my new vehicles, a 06 Corolla S and the 05 HCH MT have their oil filters torqued on so tight the tool that's made to remove tham gave me some trouble. -Anyone else almost turn the car on its side removing the oil filter? It's my experience that the dealer service dept. does this also (one of the great many reasons that keep me away from them).

I have had them on so tight that the oil filter wrench bent the filter trying to get it off. Now you have me worried about getting my oil changed at a dealership. I already wonder if they put the oil they claim they do if I don't see it from bottles and the seal being broken in front of me. I have been bent over by too many shops and service departments in the past. I know changing oil is easy, I just thought it would be better proof if the dealer does it and have thier documentation. That is why I am going to get it changed at 10,000, even though I have a Penzoil sticker from when I bought the car that is was changed not that long ago, it will have less than 3000 miles on the current oil.

I borrowed my wife's pickle jar opener and got the old one off. Since it was destined for the trash, the deformations didn't matter. My next step was going to be a hammer and long screw driver. (Give me a lever and a fulcrum and . . .)

Many years ago I worked at a moter home dealership and they would drive them in from the factory. The GMC motorhomes (no longer made) would come in from Mi. and in make ready we would always change the oil. The filters were always hard to get off. Yes sometimes a long screwdriver was needed, nobody could understand this. The ones from Calif. with Dodge chassis we never had that problem.kevin
