Default Mitsubishi Creates Electrifying Lancer Evo IX MIEV Concept

This electric motor technology will hopefully make it into Hybrid cars at some future point !!

"Zero Emissions Evo IX MIEV Produces 268-HP and 1,528 LB-FT of Torque

The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX (ninth generation in case you were wondering) is set to go rallying later this week. While this news wouldnt be out of the ordinary, given the Lancers winning history in rally racing, this is no ordinary Evo, and the rally event isnt an FIA sanctioned WRC event. Instead of burning high-octane gasoline, this car runs on volts and amps. The vehicle in question is Mitsubishis Lancer Evo IX MIEV (Mitsubishi In-Wheel Electric Vehicle) prototype, and the rally is this years Shikoku Electric Vehicle Rally."

Some people are questioning the durability of in-wheel motors, especially as it may be affected by flooded roads and other debris, so hopefully this will put it through some good tests.

Each wheel is powered by the same size motor as the Prius II main traction motor, so I can imagine this will be quite a fast car! Can't wait for Mitsubishi to get selling their EV's.

Sadly, Mitsubishi will be out of business in about a year or two. Anyway, BMW also claimed some ridiculous torque output for a hybrid prototype of theirs, but then you look at the fine print and it's only up to 250 rpm or something. That's barely enough to get the vehicle up to 1.5mph or something in first gear. I imagine Mitsibushi is using similar math.

Electric vehicles, and especially in-wheel motor EVs don't need reduction gears because of their massive torque, even in an HSD or Escape that's how having a stepped or CVT transmission was avoided.

Here's what an electric motor's torque curve looks like (and why hybrids and EVs can be so much quicker off the line):

The airplane that bombed Pearl Harbor -- the Zero -- was made by Mitsubishi.

Some might say that was a long time ago... but I hold grudges.

All the electronics and computer systems in the stealth bombers are made by Mitsubishi too.
They are very much a part of the military-industrial complex.

The people that race electric motorcycles say that for a gasoline engined motorbike to be able to compete with an electric version, it needs 3 times the horsepower!

The reason is that a gasoline engine does not make peak power all the way through the rev range. Eg, a 300 hp @ 6,000 rpm gasoline engine will only make 100 hp @ 2,000 rpm. However, with an electric motor you always have maximum power available - hence the ability of the electric motorcycles to devastate the gasoline opposition on the track - even when they have twice the power.

So this 268 bhp Mitsubishi will accelerate like it has >500 bhp!
