More Scary News
Okay, I'll get off my geo-political soapbox for now, and get on my "save-the-planet" soapbox:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science...eut/index.html
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The Southern Ocean around Antarctica is so loaded with carbon dioxide that it can barely absorb any more, so more of the gas will stay in the atmosphere to warm up the planet, scientists reported Thursday.
Human activity is the main culprit, said researcher Corinne Le Quere, who called the finding very alarming.
The phenomenon wasn't expected to be apparent for decades, Le Quere said in a telephone interview from the University of East Anglia in Britain.
"We thought we would be able to detect these only the second half of this century, say 2050 or so," she said. But data from 1981 through 2004 show the sink is already full of carbon dioxide. "So I find this really quite alarming."

I am suprised some genius hasn't come up with a C02 scrubber for car exhaust systems.

Re: More Scary News
Unfortunately that's no simple task. Every gallon of gasoline we burn reacts with air to produce roughly 20 pounds of CO2. That makes on-board carbon capture nigh impossible. The best bet by far is to use carbon neutral fuels...biomass. The carbon dioxide goes out your tailpipe and back into whatever you grow to produce fuel.

I am more interested in capturing the heat of vaporization from the H(2)O vapor.

Re: More Scary News
I'm very sorry, but the article quoted is totally non-credible, and should be deleted. It must have been written by some lay person who did not know what they were talking about. That article is about as bad as some well-intentioned celebrity who says hybrids are cool because they don't use gas.
#1 "human-spawned ozone depletion in the upper atmosphere over the Southern Ocean has created large changes in temperature throughout the atmosphere, Le Quere said."
FALSE! The ozone hole and global warming are unrelated. Ozone absorbs UV so we don't easily get cancer. Less ozone = more UV reaching the surface. But UV does not warm the earth. IR ( infrared ) warms the earth.
#2 the article states: "the uneven nature of global warming has produced higher temperatures in the northern parts of the world than in the south"
Well DUH! 80% of the land is in the northern hemisphere, and land ( rock, soil, sand, ) heats up about 3 times faster than water does. It has NOTHING to do with "more humans" or "more carbon dioxide" in the north.
Please don't believe everything you read. Since this author mixes up the basics of general Earth Science 101, the entire article is non-credible.

Re: More Scary News
I’m all for global warming. I hate cold weather. I plan on contributing to this phenomena as much as humanly possible. I’m going out to find and eat as much unwashed beans and greens as I can find.

Re: More Scary News
This is a report by Corinne Le Quere, scientist.
We shouldn't question any news which support the global warming theory, should we?

Hot Georgia, I don't understand your post. ??? ???
Global warming is occuring, just not for the reasons stated in the article.

I can't say I fully understand the article, but it is put out by reputable scientists:
