Re: More Scary News
Anyone read about the Pika going extinct in the Rocky Mountains? This rodent will die of heat if it gets to 75F, so it has had to go higher up the mountains....some peaks are just too hot.
There are other articles on many species being theatened, such as the polar bears, and the evidence seems credible.

Re: More Scary News
So who wants more rodents?
( Just kidding... I know they are necessary in the food chain... somewhere! )
The findings are controversial. Pieter Tans, a senior scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, Colo., said the measurements of carbon-dioxide changes were so subtle that they could have been due to "sampling errors".

Until recently, bees could be dismissed, but they definitlely matter in the food chain as many a farmer will testify. Nobody is quite sure what is happening to the bees, but it's getting harder to say humans don't impact other species and ultimately his surroundings.

Hmm, sampling errors over a period of 30 years. Sure, maybe, possible. I'm referring to the measurements that have been and are being made from the top of Mauna Loa.
Some people just don't want to believe the truth!
I suspect our species is not smart enough and is doomed.

Re: More Scary News
Apparently the summary conclusion of the study in question (which Earthling cited in post 9) is:
Quote:
|
Based on observed atmospheric CO2 concentration and an inverse method, we estimate that the Southern Ocean sink of CO2 has weakened between 1981 and 2004 by 0.08 PgC/y per decade relative to the trend expected from the large increase in atmospheric CO2. This weakening is attributed to the observed increase in Southern Ocean winds resulting from human activities and projected to continue in the future. Consequences include a reduction in the efficiency of the Southern Ocean sink of CO2 in the short term (~25 years) and possibly a higher level of stabilization of atmospheric CO2 on a multicentury time scale.
|
This seems utterly reasonable to me. If this is the result they observe, then it is, in fact, alarming and not junk science or anything I feel any need to debunk.

Well DUH! 80% of the land is in the northern hemisphere, and land ( rock, soil, sand, ) heats up about 3 times faster than water does. It has NOTHING to do with "more humans" or "more carbon dioxide" in the north.
|
Also, plants are a primary absorber of CO2, and since the southern hemisphere is primarily ocean (and Antarctica is totally barren), there is less plant life available down there.
Where's "ObviousMan" (my favorite character in the comic strip "Non Sequitur" when you really need him?

There's no efficient or carbon neutral or environmentally sound way to produce biomass fuels...at least if you think in traditional biodiesel type fuels anyway.
We're going to have to destroy unsustainable amounts of forestry and landmass to create biofuels. At what cost? Destroy rainforests that house the most precious items on the planet so we can continue to feed our ludicrous energy wants?
I'll say it now and probably will say it again over time....but I don't think humans have fully grasped quite yet how truly screwed we are. We can blame it on us, on natural cycles...whatever makes us feel better. But we are truly truly screwed.

Another one of those "inconvient truths" is each one of us is going to have to cut back on our demands on resources - depending on biofuels, hydrogen, etc. as a painless soultion is a pipe dream.
