Default Move Over

I have seen two of these in the Seattle area now:

http://www.leftlanedrivers.org/

One was on a BMW that was doing apprximately 95 miles per hour on I5 southbound that tailgated a Mercury that was only doing 85. I was in the number 2 lane doing 75 and was worried that he would lose it when he had to hit the brakes because the Mercury stomped on his.

The other was on a Chevy Tahoe that came up on my rear with at least a 45 miles per hour overtake in the center lane when I was doing about 65.

The guy has a point regarding slow left lane drivers that refuse to move over. However, the use of the left lane at posted speeds for passing is legal and appropriate. From what I can see this tatic has been embraced by the agressive types that consistenly ignore maximum speed laws.

When does insisted enforcement of courtesy become vigilante law?

Then you'll appreciate this LED text sign in my rear window:

When I'm in the far, right-hand (slow, turning lane) and traffic runs up without passing, the sign gives them an alternative to tailgating, "Go Around 24-38 miles per hour." <grins>

This is rampant. We just had a very tragic accident in which a 15 year old girl was killed and her 16 year old boyfriend was critically injured because, apparently, a person sped up behind them (the car carrying the teens and 4 others was in the left lane about to get off on a left-hand exit) and the teen driver tapped the brakes. The other person didn't care for this, sped around the teens, cut over in front of them, and slammed on the brakes, causing the teens' vehicle to roll. The acident happened very early on a Sunday, which is probably why no one else died.
I used to always drive in the left lane, although I was generally better behaved than most people who have road rage. Now that I'm in the FEH, I drive slower and as a courtesy use the far right lane so that the people who want to speed can. I haven't had too many people give me the one fingered salute for driving below the speed limit.

hi, mary. i am in minnesota, too, and heard about that accident, though not how it happened. that is so sad and useless.

this is blantant, aggressive driving at its worst. and now there are drivers pushing the envelope even more. will they stay at the speed limit, if their gripe is someone slower in the left lane? or will they continue to speed as is described by the poster above.

if we put a "please pass" sticker on our cars if we are going slower in the right lane (i generally drive 60 in a 65), or the speed limit on a 2 lane, will they then go around us without what seems to be the necessary message.....gunning the engine as they go past? where does it all end?

With rare exception, following drivers appear to understand my LED sign and pass. Many will start passing in advance.

This may or may not have some value in the lefthand lane but what does it say about the driver? What if that driver is in the right handlane? Or..... what if that car pulls up behind a police car? What kind of reaction would you think a cop would have?

One thing you can do about unsafe Left lane conditions is contact the district police chief.
I did that last year and the next week they were out in force. I guess they got a few calls.

i wondered those very same questions. it's not like the sign would only be there if he wanted someone to move over. it's on there all the time, and he's going to look mighly stupid sitting in traffic that way........

Heck, if they'd just made a sign that said "A*****E", it would have saved letters.
