Saturday I put $6 worth of gas in my car. The woman next to me put $45 into her minivan. I got some nasty looks. AND to top it off, I drove up to the mountains and back on that $6 Anyone else get the evil (jealous) eye?

All I've ever gotten are questions about my car and I answer everyone. But mostly, I don't have time for looking around and being observed since I tend to make quick top-offs, twice a week, rather than filling the whole tank. Like you, 2-3 gallons at a time.

It's the American way. Don't take the simple and obvious solution, then be offended at those who do. We should be driving inefficient cars for the sake of solidarity.

Maybe the nasty look was aimed at the pump itself and you got caught in the crossfire?

Just do like we do...fill up every two weeks. Then you're pumping 10 gallons. Nasty-lady-the-minivan won't know how long you go between fill-ups.

There is sort of a variant of the "cultural wars" in vehicles. The minivan driver might assume merigayle is passing judgement because of what she is driving.

I have a story on the way where it could not be more obvious there was tension because we were driving completely different vehicles.

I've never gotten evil glares, or even questions. The only time I can remember anyone talking to me at the pump was a lady commenting on my Apple sticker... she thought I worked for them or something.

Met a couple yesterday who have a Prius and live in MA. They said people do give them the evil eye. maybe it is an east coaster thing! lol. Obviously, a Prius and Insight will get more notice than the undercover hybrids like the Civic and Accord. Unless they are really looking, they will not know.
