I'm very glad that the 2.4L engine is available as an option. The previous 1.8L engine was lacking.

But as they said, your fuel economy will suffer as a result...

Nice to see that a modern complement of safety features, including ABS and side airbags will now be standard, even on the base trims. I never thought that safety should be an economic decision.

That 2.4L engine is the same base engine from the Camry CE....not exactly fast.

A Corolla is much lighter than the Camry, at least it used to be. So the 2.4 in it should be quick unless there has been a massive weight gain. Curb weight figures posted anywhere?

Have not seen much posted as far as spec's. It is bigger than the current model but I doubt a large increase.

I think the pricing is what I'd want to see most. Add in the options to bring it to the level of say the Si and compare. Not as quick a car, but it might be well worth the savings if it comes to around 17-18K.

With Toyota ending the tC scion run, they remove the only sports type car that could compete (using the same 2.4 engine again). I'm guessing it will perform as well as the tC, hopefully bringing the younger crowd back into Toyota.

Toyta has only one hope for that, and that is if they produce the hybrid FT-HS:

I just hope that a car like this that's a hybrid, if driven mildly rather than the way it looks, will get decent gas mileage and not be like the Lexus GS 450h... which basically just doesn't get "good" gas mileage no matter how hyper miley you try to drive.

The problem with a hybrid appeal to the younger crowd is the connection with hybrids and lack of speed.

A big success of scion division has been upgrading and tuning the cars. Aftermarket parts to increase the performance is a big part of scion culture. The same will fall over to the XRS versions of the matrix and corolla, hell they already have a matrix rally edition planned.

Any hybrid isn't a big seller to a crowd like that, unless of course it can be proven to go fast, and have a sizable enough gas engine to tinker with. Which defeats the purpose of a hybrid and makes it more like the lexus.

Want a quick peak at the new Corolla in real life? Find a 97-01 Camry!!

The new 09 Corolla will be almost the same size dimensionally as that Gen Camry, except it will be 10" shorter overall and 3" shorter in WB. But the new Corolla will have better fuel economy in both engines as that 2.2L did along with more power in both engines as that 2.2L had along with more safety features, as noted, and a lower price!!

That's a slick trick.

And yet the 2.2L diesel in the Euro civic gets better mpg's than the corolla
