I find the beep annoying, too. And I don't even own a Prius!
I bet google gets a lot of searches every day for "Prius Reverse beep"!

Well, it does have a purpose. When the Prius in reverese it does not use the gas engine. therefore it is silent in reverse, so you don't have the normal feedbackyou would expect. It's a little suprising the first time.

First-gen Prius does not beep so I am not sure what you guys are referring to. Is it an external beep, like when construction equipment backs up? or is it a beep inside the car?

If the beep is inside the car, then it is not unique to the Prius. My parents have a Toyota Matrix with 6-speed manual transmission. First gear is left and forward. Reverse is all the way left and forward (after a bit of resistance so you don't accidentally shift to reverse). When in reverse gear there is a beep coming from the dash to remind you that you are in reverse.

It's an in-car beep that sounds like it aught to be outside the car.

From PriusChat.

# How do I turn off that annoying beeping in reverse?
1. Power on (not necessarily ready, IG-ON will do).
2. Set Trip/ODO to ODO
3. Power off.
4. Power on to ready (brake on).
5. Within 6 seconds, press and hold ODO for 10 seconds or more.
6. WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* 10 seconds, Shift from P to R, then back to P. Now release ODO.
7. You'll see in the trip display "b on" or "b off".
8. Press ODO to toggle.
9. Now power off.
(If you disconnect the 12v battery, you may lose this change.)

You may also disable the seatbelt beep, but I do not recommend it.

As always, performing any modification is at your own risk.

Cheers, Doug

My previous car had a backup beeper (purchased from a mail-order auto parts company). It replaced one of the backup lights and worked when the transmission was in Reverse. I got it for the same reason construction vehicles have them -- a safety feature. Its purpose is to warn pedestrians & drivers (especially in crowded areas such as parking lots) that you're backing up. IMHO it's a good idea.

I totally agree, I had one of those exact light-beepers in my 1980 Ford E100 van. Unfortunately the Prius beeper isn't audible outside the car! It's just there to remind the driver that he/she is in reverse, not so useful...
