Default Pennzoil introduces motor oil for hybrid vehicles

http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/051207-3.htm

Quote:

Burlington, Ontario – Pennzoil has announced the introduction of the first motor oil in Canada designed specifically for hybrid vehicles. The company reports that more than 3,000 hybrid vehicles were sold in Canada in 2004 and estimates the number to reach over 100,000 units by 2010. Pennzoil says that hybrid engines have unique lubrication requirements, as they are designed to turn off when the car is idling and thus create harsh stop-and-go operating conditions for the engine. These conditions can accelerate harmful deposit formations; Pennzoil Platinum for Hybrid Vehicles is specifically designed to provide hybrid engines with extra protection against deposits. The full synthetic oil also improves fuel economy and significantly reduces emissions. The oil will be available at select installer and fast-lube locations beginning this month.

question, how many of you guys do your own service ups or do you guys go to honda like me and pay the premium for that piece of mind?

.

i got around 20 km a liter when i drove a civic 5 spd using advanced hypermiler techniques
and now I drive a salvage nwh20 prius that gets almost to 25 km/l with 192,000 km to date.

I change my own. So do several other HAH guys- you don't even need to get under the car to do it! Bar10Dah posted a nice "how-to." 15min start-finish- enough to have a beer while the neighbors scratch their heads, wondering why someone would actually want to get their hands dirty.

Pennzoil announced 0w-20 last summer; this sounds about like the timing I heard back then; Wal-Mart and retailers are supposed to get it this spring.

Mobil is re-releasing its 0w-20 in 06 also, after pulling it in the spring.

I change my own. This may be unique, but it's been my experience that even the dealerships do a piss-poor job of changing oil (or doing anything else for that matter), not just those worthless Jiffy shops.

I take my Insight in to the dealer for all services, but from now on, will bring along my own synthetic 0w-20 for them to use. We do the same with the other Insight and the Prius.

Does anyone know what using 0W-20 does to the warranty? I don't.

I question their claim about the harsh conditions. The oil was always cleaner in the Prius, than any of the vehicles I ever owned previously, despite the 7500 mile service interval. The FEH with it's 10k mile interval remains to be seen.

I can tell you, for what I paid in oil and filter from the dealership ($19.21), it's almost worth it to let them change it ($24.95 normally, $19.95 with a coupon).

But personally, I enjoy doing my own maintenance. And besides, at least when I do my own maintenance, I KNOW when the mechanic is being lazy and didn't do what's right. (Like using the wrong weight oil. Not torquing the filter or drain bolt properly. Not putting in a full five quarts.)

I hope you didn't put in 5 quarts...capacity w/ filter change is 4.5
