The current plugin units are more prototype than practical. They will teach valuable lessons but I'm not tempted.
I'm thinking along the line of a set of 15-20 lb modules with 'tri-state' connectors. When removed, the contacts are isolated from the battery bus. No matter how they are stacked, they can't short or form a series. Individual modules can be replaced as needed. Better still, the control electronics allows sizing the capacity to the user's commuting needs. Someone having a 10 mile commute does not need 40 mile battery capacity.
To me, today's plugin's look like Model Ts in sophistication although compared to the alternative, they are the latest thing. Just don't look at today's models as anything but concepts or early prototypes.
