I was at the local drug store tonight and walked by the magazine rack. At the top of one of the magazines was a headline that said Hybrids vs Diesels. I couldn't pass it up. In the Feb 2005 issue of Popular Mechanics there is an article comparing three Hybrids to three diesels that are "similar". The comparisons are between a Jeep Liberty Sport CRD (Diesel) and the Ford Escape, the Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI vs Honda Accord Hybrid, and last but not least the Volkswagen Jetta GL TDI vs Toyota Prius (II).

The main conclusion, which will not be a surprise to anyone here, "In the end we concluded that the real gains in fuel economy were to be found in driving habits, not necessarily in either drivetrain technology".
