Prius LED Brake lights
I have noticed the LED brake lights on my 04 they are nice and bright..
My thought or question is why not impliment the LED lights into the turn signals? They pull a fraction of what the incandecent bulbs do and have a life of 100,000 hrs of continous use and would pull even less from the system leaving more battery life..

Re: Prius LED Brake lights
I was looking at the 7thgencivic forum topic on LED and turn signals, and one issue they have found is that changing the turn signals to LEDs causes them, in Hondas, to hyperblink. The theory is that they use a fraction of the energy. The workaround is to also install a resistor.
BTW, in the 8thgeneration civic forum, they use the new hybrid side view mirrors as a mod to non hybrids, because of the built in signal. Go figure.

JW,
This has been done by others. You will also need to replace the "blinker" with one that is insensitive to the amount of current draw or they will blink very fast. Battery life is not an issue for me as I don't use the turn signals except for short times before making a turn.

Re: Prius LED Brake lights
One of the ways that car manufacturers have devised to alert drivers that a turn signal bulb is blown off (and thus a safety hazard), is to blink the lights very rapidly. They determine that by sensing the total bulb's current, and if a bulb is blown, it will fall below a pre-determined threshold, and the controller will then alert you.
Since LEDs consume less current, the total current will fall below that threshold and then you've got this blinker on steroids...
I love how LEDs look in automotive applications...since its color is a single wavelength to start with, (i.e, light did not start white and then was color-filtered) their color is very deep, very intense.
There are some stunningly beautiful yellow LEDs, but they are more expensive than red LEDs.

Re: Prius LED Brake lights
I believe the 06 HCH has LED lights for the center brake light. Many higher end lux. cars are using them in brake lights because of their clarity and long life. The downside is that they have a higher up-front cost, and it isn't worth it for most auto applications since the consumer usually can't tell the difference. I'm an Architect and would like to use LED technology more often in buildings, but the price is still to high for most applications. It is coming down though. According to light reps that I work with Blue is the most expensive, then red, then yellow and white.
Interestingly, companies like GE make a lot of money selling light bulbs and have a strong lobby.... I suspect this could slow down the adaptation of LED a bit as well.
They are perfect for signage applications, but they are slow to catch on there, because sign makers make much of their profits serviceing high maintenance neon lights.

LOL, the retail mark up is horrible! I remember when LEDs came out for police cars everyone said it would not make it as it took to many to make them bright..
Now it only takes 3 to be bright with the Gen III's.
Your right in a sence that the cost from high to low is Blue, Red, Amber then White.
The Blue LEDs cost more to make, is the excuse I've always heard... one pair of LED deck lights costs the average officer $350 - 400 bucks I opened a store out of my home and found that the retail mark up was huge the same pair of blue lights one would pay $300-$400 for, really cost the dealer $99.00..
the life expecancy of LEDs of continous ilumination is one hundred thousand hrs/ 11yrs.
Yes they do make kits to slow them down to a standard flash rate like standard turn signals..
I just wish and wondered why they dont use them for turn signals like cadillac does.. You certainly wouldnt miss them signaling to turn lol...
