In the Sixties and Seventies, I would easily say that Mercedes was a better car than anything else in general car market (exclusive of specialty cars like Rolls Royce, Ferreri, etc.).

Having owned two Sixties Mercedes Benz cars (a 190 SL and 220 S) - they were excellent and reliable. In the Seventies, and early 80's I owned 4 different BMW's (2002, 2002tii, 530i, and 733i), because I could afford them compared to the MB. However Both BMW and Mercedes have priced themselves out of my budget. Reading reports today about which is better, I would conclude that BMW's are more reliable than MB's. However, if I were to buy a car in those price ranges ($50-85K), I would spend it on a Lexus, which is hands down a better vehicle than either the BMW or MB offerings. Expecially when it comes to features and most importantly Reliability.

My last luxury car was an LS400 (89) which I would still have today if it wasn't totaled by another driver.

Alas, today I drive a '05 Prius, which is proving to be the best from a cost of ownership poinit of view (cash out of pocket in the long term).

Hi Douglas:

___Although a bit OT, in terms of TCO (Total Cost of Ownership or True Cost to Own as Edmunds calls it), the Prius II has many rivals that can match it although none can match its FE. These rivals may have lower emissions, safer crash ratings, are larger, more powerful, better handling, and have even more luxurious amenities for even less price out the door.

___The Prius II is an excellent automobile but make sure you look at all of your alternatives before making this large a purchase is all …

___Good Luck

Thanks for the reply.

My last car before my Prius was and Audi A4 Quattro (98), and after 6 years, the TCO was $650/Month. This includes the depreciation, Gas, Maintenance, etc. This does not include any financing, since I pay cash for my cars.

The Prius over a 10 year life, will cost me approximately $350/Month = $36K in savings vs the Audi A4. Since I paid full price for the Prius ($30K with extendend warranty, and 4 years maintenance), I will end up at the end of 10 years saving enough money to buy a new one.

That is a pretty good deal.

As for other cars that provide the same features and conforts at the same monthly cost savings, I have not found one that I would like to own.

Cheers, Doug
