I get in the car for a trip - not an ego trip.

Not so many years ago, people were not trying to buy the most tank-like vehicle they could - notice the roads are a little more like the Wild West these days?

I was expressing frustration about guys like the one pictured. My dictionary does not say frustration=smugness.

I am very smug... if smug is defined as a person who plans ahead like:

* A person who has planned for their retirement "feels" tward their local Wal-Mart greeter
* A person that has money saved for emergencies vs someone who has not.
* etc

But I don't feel I'm "better" than someone filling thier SUV. Kind of a mix of pitty becuase they often look so upset, at the same time glad I didn't get one of those monsters.

But at the same time I'll mention my efficiency only when appropriate.

.

Efficient drivers do it better.

My father was very smug (and annoying) because he had the ability to see into the future somewhat (an ability that was passed on to yours truely). He used to say that people just lived their lives "bouncing off the walls", meaning that ordinary people could not plan far enough ahead to see where their next step would take them.

What is horrible is that in spite of resenting my father for his smugness (he was an a$$hole at times), I'm exactly like him.

The poll needs an "eleven" because my smugness goes to "eleven"! (Spinal Tap)

Sometimes I don't find it right to judge a book by it's cover. Maybe they are working the door at Wally World as their way of passing the time.

The other day after working out on my property I went to a "home show". They had all the latest and greatest stuff to include a metal roofing material that looked like ceramic tile. I was very interested in that product and waited patiently for 10 minutes to talk to the salesman while he was talking to a nicely dressed elderly man.

To sum it up, here's what he said. "You can't afford this, go buy from someone else." Those weren't his exact words but that's a loose translation. I looked ratty because I was working on my property and dindn't have time to drive an additional 50 miles to get cleaned up. I also hadn't shaved for a few days as during the weekend it's "me time". I looked like a bum but could afford his product. I picked up his card since I am in the market for roofing material. I'll be calling him up when I buy from someone else.

I couldn't help but think about smelling my own farts while voting. > The wife says I am smug & "stuck up". I voted "5" as I can be quite stuck up at times though 4 may have been more appropriate now that I think about it.

From dictionary.com *SMUG* - Exhibiting or feeling great or offensive satisfaction with oneself or with one's situation; self-righteously complacent: “the smug look of a toad breakfasting on fat marsh flies” (William Pearson).

It's not wise to be very self-assured - life's bumps in the road will do a good job of bursting your bubble.

You mean, like all those folks who worked at Enron...

Awesome.

[Tim climbs soap box]

I've studied a bit about what it takes to win over the hearts and minds of folks when it comes to causes, or matters of how one lives their life. Never once was "be smug" on the list. In fact, being smug is a good way to make a life-long enemy of your cause. A lot of hard-core SUV drivers would not even entertain the idea of owning a hybrid if they thought it put them in the same category as the self-righteous tree-hugging group we're being portrayed as. They'd object on that principle alone. Now folks can go on being how they like and you won't hear a word from me. If your "cause" is getting to point A to point B using an efficient and clean car, do it how you like. However if your cause is to maybe convince others this is a good thing, make them want to be you, not resent you.

[Leaves soap box]

Cheers.
