Default RIP: Considerate Driving

We've had a number of threads on this, Delta Flyer is the person I think of in fact when it comes to this topic, but rather piggyback this on an existing thread, I felt the need to make a new one.

Over the last few weeks, I have been amazed by how badly people drive their vehicles, and I don't mean any class, or type. In general. People don't use turn signals (regardless of how much it may help other drivers), tailgate as if their life depended on it for no reason. Rush up to red lights as if they don't have to stop. Big surprise, right? No, not really.

No, this is a new level, or low. Over the last two weeks I have been cut off four times. I have been tailgated 3 times by vehicles that have between 1 and 3 open lanes to the right of me (That's open, not existing), seemingly just because they can. (If they were trying to intimidate me, they failed. If they do it for too long, I slow down. ) Still, not surprising.

Instead, I speak of incidents that have recently happened. The North exit from the University is three lanes, the left lane is for people to go straight out, the middle and right are for people turning right. Leaving, in the middle lane, I make my right turn, and get honked at by the person in the right lane, who slams on his brakes, and jumps around behind me to get into the left lane to make the turn around down the road a bit from the right turn. Aparantly, he expected me not to obey the law, the painted road indicators, the signs with the lanes and arrows, or what everyone who was in front of me did.

Alas, bad, but still not to the heart of the matter. Last Tuesday, coming home, on I-94, I was in the right lane, Cruise Control on, when a car coming onto the expressway is entering the expressway. I do, as taught, maintain my speed. So does he. We're now next to each other, with his nose slightly ahead of mine. His lane ends as it merges with mine. He does not speed up. The lane starts to end, so I turn off the CC, which slows me down slightly. He moves over and into the right lane, right in front of me. This is at 9:30 at night. His passenger turns on the dome light, so I can see that he and his passenger are flipping me off. He turns off the light, the car jumps into the middle lane (cutting off an F-150 BTW), and he speeds up and away.

I've heard, seen bad driving. But being flipped off for not running him off the road or hitting him? LOL!

Sorry, I know that many people would be furious, but really, I don't care. Maybe it's because of who I am, but really, it doesn't bother me, as long as my FEH is fine, so am I; in fact, I thought it was rather funny.

However, it makes me wonder just why they thought it was the proper way to use their motor vehicle, and what happened to people who drive respectfully. Perhaps they were all killed by the rude drivers out there.

This also seems to be substantially worse in the last 2 months than in any previous year of my driving experience, or even in all of them rolled together. In the post Katrina month, I was amazed to see everyone slow down (Actually to the speeds I usually go on expressways), but now it seems like they're all driving to kill or get into an accident.

You need the Carpoon to teach these jerks a lesson. Let's see them drive with a cabin full of teargas!

LOL, I'd still settle for the lightning gun idea I had, with a little emitter in the front and rear of the vehicle, and with a switch, completely discharging the HV battery as a single electrical bolt to whatever is in front or behind me, my choice.

In Baltimore, there's a rude-driving phenomenon that is just *way* over the top. It involves people who just park their cars *in traffic*. Yes indeed. Coming in to Baltimore on St-Paul or leaving on Charles, traffic just gets *paralyzed* because people activate their 4-way flashers and park their cars in traffic so that they can run into a convinience store for a carton of smokes, lotto tickets, or a 6-pack of cheap beer.

I wish I could say it's an SUV phenomenon, but these jerks drive all kinds of cars -- from '83 Chevette to Hummer H2.

It's the height of rudeness. It also reflects their laziness ("why should *I* have to spend 30 seconds looking for a parking space, when I can just hold up a couple hundred drivers instead.")

.

Hope is like a candle held against the night.

If that happened to me I think... no I know I would get out of my car and move their car for them. And then I would toss their keys.

I've had my share of compacts and motorcycles drive very aggressively as well.

My dream car is not a luxury vehicle, but simply accessories that would take out tires on aggressive drivers or tailights that blind flashing tailgaters...

Keep me away from those areas ... I drive a bunch of miles each week and for the most part find Ohio drivers (for the most part) aren't nearly as impatient or rude. To actually stop your car in traffic and run into the convenient store is pretty bad.

When rigger came to Fort Worth, I remarked that you can almost tell from the traffic when you are leaving Dallas - the folk from Cowtown are noticably nicer....

Chris, you are SO right - it does seem to be B'more thang!! I didn't notice it so much when I lived there (before 1980, OK now I'm showing my age!), but lately when we visit it's just getting out of hand.

Fortunately drivers around here don't seem to be so bad - the worst thing is the ones who feel like they have to "ride your bumper" for about 10 minutes before passing, I don't know why, just to let you know they're there or something. Usually big trucks, I guess it's an intimidation thing. I seem to get it more in the Prius than I did in the FEH (and I drive faster in the Prius!). I think they just hate little cars, perceive them as underpowered or something.
