Some many years ago I was doing some research on an old engine from like the 1930s. It's only fuel was burning wood or straw or what ever. What is was was, a Stirling Engine. The first use of this type of engine I saw was for pumping water to the upper floors of a house. Now , this technology uses almost anything thing that can cause a difference in temperature. Before I get confused, here is a link to a page that will give you more information. This type of engine is in use now in Australia and New Zealand as a source of power in the outback. I have considered one for use as a back up power supply here at home for when the power goes out.

Anyway, no reason that the principal could not be used in a car, some day.

Check out this link and follow the links from there.

Okay, but what's the fuel-source? This was unclear in my readings.

Also unclear was how much thrust/torque/power this device could be expected to deliver. I'm looking for a new type of aircraft engine and fuel.

It runs on the energy stored in the compressed air. So, like hydrogen powered vehicles or fully electric vehicles, the compressed air should not be thought of so much as a fuel source but as a means of storing energy. One would still have to compress the air...And, the ultimate "cleanness" of the entire system would depend on how the electrical or other energy used to compress the air was produced. But, as, they explain on this web page, making the car non-polluting at the place where it is and transferring the issue of pollution back to the source does allow for certain advantages, just as for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

I'm sorry, I still cannot see how this would work. And because air compressors are either gas or electric powered, it's still pollutive, and it still requires electricity which is mostly generated by coal and oil. Both are pollutive AND limited.

I cannot get excited about this unless somebody can show me that the car would be "rechargable" by some other means. Work with me here! Tell me I can hook it up to a lifecycle bike and "pedal" it to recharge it...or SOMETHING. After all, I could use the excercise, and it's too dangerous on the roads to ride an ACTUAL BICYCLE.

I'll patiently wait for a better explanation. Or the perfect solution, whichever comes first.

Sell the drivetrain as a kit and I'll make it fit in my Civic.
Stevo, are you game for a project?

Wow - Iremember reading about this many years ago - probably 8 or so. As far as I remember the car has a tank of air under extremely high pressure and the air is then released causing the car to move.

True - it just relocates the source of pollution - just like the electric cars and the hydrogen cars. But it is still an interesting solution. Especially since this method somehow is claimed to clean the air as it is released.

I think they tried some of these cars in Mexico several years ago.

Pretty neat that they will put it out finally.

I'll take pics and be in charge of the beer. You guys seriously don't expect me to get my own hands dirty, do you? <_<

And oh yeah...if one of you guys has an engine fall on you, you'd better have a hoist there, so's I can lift it off of you without straining my back!
