From my standpoint, I use cruise control to maintain a steady speed as I often have other variables at play. My focus has been and remains on the hybrid technology, what makes my vehicle more efficient. Adding a human element risks 'poisoning' the results:

• fuel studies
• tire studies
• alignment studies
• lubrication studies
• energy studies

Over time, I've learned enough about the Prius to understand what works and doesn't work and why. This means I can (and do) predict my mileage on any trip and arrival times. Except for unexpected traffic delays, it has become an efficient predicable ride and I use cruise control almost exclusively ... but not just one speed:

• 65 mph - flat, no wind highway
• 60 mph - flat, <35F (<3C) cold weather
• 55 mph - climb hills, headwind (follow trucks)
• 46-65 mph - upper speed range
• 24-38 mph - lower speed range
• 0-25 mph - neighborhood, no cruise control

I know exactly how much each "UP" and "DOWN" tap on my cruise control changes speed and that it can take "four" quick ones before it starts to 'forget.' But this is how I like to drive.
