Default Stolen hybrids

As gas hits $4 a gallon, are hybrids being stolen more? And if they are more of a target, does the non-key systems like the TCH help keep the car in the hands of the rightful owner?

I don't know of any hard data, but I would guess hybrids are NOT a theft target. Most cars are stolen to be stripped for parts. The real theft targets are high selling 5 year old cars because that's the major hot parts market. It's too hard to re-register a stolen car to actually drive it.

Question Re: Stolen hybrids

I am torn. I want to post my very high MPG on the back of my car. I am proud of it and I want others to "go hybrid".
But I have some concern not over the car being stolen, but what about people getting jealous and running a key along the side or slashing the tires.

Thoughts?

I personally do not like to draw attention. You already know your Honda Insight has drawn attention due to its unique profile. It might be neat to "create" a rear digital display reflecting your current fuel mileage but, I would want the ability to turn this off when I want or need to. Good luck and maybe a photo of your next invention would be a welcome addition.

More common is the growing problem of gas theft via siphoning. small amounts often go unnoticed.

I installed a locking gas cap shortly after I obtained my hybrid last June.

So, in conclusion, car thieves are motivated for parts and maybe joyrides, but not their environmentally or fiduciary responsibility to illegally obtain a hybrid. Makes sense.

A friend of mine parked his car at an airport lot and noticed a couple of gallons missing from the tank upon his return. It wasn't enough to complain, and he didn't have hard proof. Pissed 'em off when he realized the shuttle that picked them up from the airport was probably being run on his gas.

I'd be all for gas companies putting an additive that makes gas lethal to anyone who siphons it orally and gets a little in their mouth.
