Re: Stolen hybrids
If someone tried to siphon gas from my Civic Hybrid, I'd know immediately because the exterior cover would have to be pried open. It has no key access, only a lever to release it in the car.
As far as airport parking lots go, everyone should know by now that they're basically shopping centers for thieves. They know that the owners are out of town, so they won't get caught stealing a car (or its contents), and the crime won't even get reported until long after the car is stripped and gone.
And forget security. Who are you trusting to watch your car? Some guy making $7 an hour in the exit booth, and another guy making $10 an hour as a security guard. The thief just gives them a couple hundred bucks, and enjoys unfettered access to the lot.
Anyway, back in the real world, even someone as stupid as a gas siphoner would know not to hit a little car with a 12 gallon tank and a protected gas cap. He'd find a full-size pickup with a 25 or 35 gallon tank, and a non-latching exterior cover.
It's a quick hit, and the truck driver is unlikely to notice the 5 gallons missing from his tank.

All too true, unfortunately. What's worse is the lot knows where you live and quite possibly when you'll be back. As a result, there have been several homes robbed as a result in the Seattle area. Never leave your house key with your car key: that just makes it too easy.

Do you often leave your keys in your car when you are away?

The lot that my work reimburses is valet, so I must leave the car key for them. Nice convenience, but the that means the lot has my car key, knows when I'm going to return, and now that I think about it, a garage door opener. Hmmm...
Other than that, I never leave keys in the car.

Re: Stolen hybrids
i thought you were referring to leaving the car at the airport.
but, i can't imagine hybrid thefts going up. as someone said, 4-6 year old cars are more targeted than hybrids

Re: Stolen hybrids
I work for an auto insurance claims department, and have been in claims for 20+ years. I have handled many auto theft losses. However, in over 20 years of handling claims, I have NEVER seen a stolen hybrid. Most "stolen" vehicles are large SUV's or pickup trucks. A significant percentage of "thefts" are owner give ups, and insurance has to pay because they are very difficult to prove fraud.
