Default Talked With a VW Beetle Diesel Owner

This past Wednesday evening I stopped by the gas station on the way home. Noticed a guy with a yellow VW Beetle with a green pump (diesel). We chatted for about five minutes. Might suprize some of you that he works in the oil industry. The other suprize is he said the acceleration is good. I checked on the 2002 Turbo S and the 0 to 60 time is 7.4 seconds - three seconds faster than my Insight.

.

61.5mpg lifetime - 82mpg in recent months

Turbo S is not the "Diesel." TDIs are a bit slower as far as acceleration but far better as far as mileage Stock TDIs run about 11 - 11.50 zero to 60 times.

For a more realistic view of what TDIs are getting you can look at a recent 'tuning session' comparison that we did. No Beetles in the list but the numbers give you an idea as to what real life drivers are capable of getting. All the cars in the list average over 40 mpg. My lifetime is roughly 45 mpg (oh look below...) Some of the hypermilers are getting 55 - 60 mpg but they are playing with driving technique (slow pokes not going over 60mph), running higher than normal air pressure in their tires and keep AC off and windows up. Not realistic in my opinion.

For the performance spreadsheet click here. BTW ... my best 0-60 for that day was 7.99 with a 1/4 mile time of 16.20 at nearly 85 miles per hour. I'm curious as how this compares to 'real' everyday hybrids averaging 45 mpg in normal driving. BTW I was running 100% biodiesel.

Yeup, that car I believe has one of the worst 0-60 times. Right up there with hybrids.

Ouch! But at least 'my particular' biodiesel TDI has been EuroTuned. (the reason the American TDIs are detuned coming from Europe is to meet EPA emissions running the current rot gut D2. Look for some improved performance as biodiesel and ULSD enters the fuel stream. BTW the new Mercedes E class CDI diesel performs better than the gas model and still gets 38 mpg. That's a nice size car with outstanding performance to be able to get that kind of mileage. (I'm still not giving up my TDI)

Y'all maybe didn't see thread about the hybrid built by West Philly high school kids? They used a TDI engine in the rear and an electric engine in the front (which I think they got from an air conditioner) to make 300 horsepower, and get 50 mpg.

Zero to 60 in about 4 seconds. Watch the video.
