Question Tax credit-One of the first 60K (Strategies?)

I'm dying to get a hybrid now with these insane gas prices, but have decided to wait for the 2006 tax credit. I have a 25 mile commute in a mini-van that gets 20 MPG.
So I want to get my Hybrid ASAP and be rewarded for my patience with the $2-3K tax credit.

I'm looking at the 06 civic hybrid and the Prius and am split 50/50. Both are great.

My goal is to order one so it will arrive on in early 2006 allowing me to capitalize on the nice gift from the US Government.

Has anybody been able to work with a dealer to lock in a delivery date?

I have talked to my local Toyota dealership about the Prius, and he indicated I would have to go on a waiting list which is OK. The way they described the deal, would be any time a new Prius came in which could be any package or color, I would have a choice to pass it up or take it. If I passed, the guy on the list behind me would take it. I want the Package #2 and would like two or three of the colors.
My problem is, who knows when the care I liked would come in, and I wouldn't want to wait to long to avoid being the 60001st guy to by a Toyota Hybrid.

Also I have to add the two car salesman at the Toyota dealership have not even heard about the new tax credit and were tying to tell me that you only get a $500 tax dedution on 2006.

Haven't talked to the Honda dealer yet, but that 06 Civic Hybrid is looking very tempting. Has anybody been able to order one yet? I saw on Autobytel review that they will be available for sale on October 5. Does that mean I can't order one until October 5th?

I've spoken to a number of dealers about getting a Prius in January 2006 as well.

I think the most important thing to do is to find a nice dealer/salesperson and establish a good rapport so they will work with you. Dealers see what vehicles will be delivered to them a month (sometimes two) in advance. Around here there isn't a waiting list for the Prius anymore, but once the dealer sees what Prius deliveries are coming they will take a deposit and promise it to you if you like. The dealer doesn't have any control over what Prius packages or configurations they will receive. But don't worry, unless you want something wierd/rare it will eventually come through. And you should have several months to still be among the first 60,000.

It is not a scientific process, and the dealer/salesperson is in control. So get friendly and get them to work with you.

You would think that you could specify what extras you want to get on a new vehicle. Things like adding a better stereo, or power windows doesn't seem an option, unless you buy the specific "package."

The Honda Dealership I went to for a test drive (John Elway in the Denver area) had a couple civics on the lot.

One Toyota dealership had a shipment that had all but one spoken for, coming in next week (I was there earlier this week).

How much is the tax credit for this year? I had heard ~2k, but never anything specific. I plan to go back to Honda next week and see what kind of deal they'll give me for my truck in trade-in.

For 2005 it is a $2000 tax deduction, not a tax credit.

Just so it's clear, you have to purchase the vehicle after January 1, 2006 and be one of the first 60,000 vehicle sold by that manufacturer. The amount is not set yet, but it looks like a $2,000 to $3,000 tax credit will be available. A credit is different than a deduction in that you reduce your tax liability by $2,000 versus a deduction which reduces the wages used to calculate your tax liability.

Here is a good article on the subject:

Actually, the tax credits will differ depending on which type of hybrid you buy:

New Hybrid Car Tax Credit
The new energy bill allows a $400 to $3400 tax credit depending on model. A credit is much better than a deduction since a tax credit directly reduces taxes owed, as opposed to simply reducing taxable income.

On A Per Automaker Basis, Tax Credit Begins Slow Phase Out Once 60,000 Hybrids Are Sold
The tax credit is set to expire in 2009, but for many hybrid models the incentive will end much sooner.

Once an automaker has sold 60,000 hybrid vehicles the tax credit for that automakers’ hybrids is slowly reduced over the next five consecutive quarters.

Hybrid Car Tax Credit Phase-Out Details

Beginning January 1, 2006 and up through the quarter that the automaker sells 60,000 hybrid vehicles, 100% of the credit is allowed.
100% of the hybrid car tax credit continues for the next consecutive quarter.
The next two quarters after that, the tax credit is reduced to 50% of the original hybrid car tax credit.
Then, for the next two quarters after that, the tax credit is reduced to 25% of the original hybrid car tax credit.
Finally, the hybrid car tax credit for that automakers’ hybrids drops to zero.
For manufacturers like Toyota, which expects to sell 120,000+ hybrid vehicles in 2005, the tax credit could begin to be reduced as soon as fourth quarter next year. Other manufacturers may see their hybrid cars have the full tax credit for a longer period.

Calculating The Hybrid Car Tax Credit
A few computations must be done and two tables must be consulted to determine the exact tax credit for each hybrid.

The tax credit is a mix of how much fuel the car saves over 120,000 miles (Conservation credit) and it’s fuel economy as expressed by a percentage of the 2002 model year fuel economy for its weight class (Fuel Economy credit). The better a hybrid car does in these two computations, the larger the tax credit.

You can calculate the hybrid car tax credit yourself using the tables in the energy bill, or have your tax preparer assist you.

Some people have calculated that the Prius is the winner in all this with a hybrid car tax credit of $2750, while the Accord may only receive a $400 hybrid car tax credit. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy has listed their estimates for the tax credits. They also have the Prius coming out on top, but with a tax credit of $3,150, the Accord as $650. But since even these numbers have been disputed, I will wait until the dust settles a bit before reporting exact amounts for each car.

Hybrid Car Tax Within The Energy Bill
In the meantime, here is the link to the House version of the Energy Bill. The entire bill is 1724 pages long, but you can begin reading on page 1391. The section is titled “Alternative Motor Vehicles and Fuel Incentives”.

The hybrid car tax credit phaseout language is on pages 1417 and 1418.

Why would one have to go on a waiting list to get a toyota? Cant you just order your car? Put down some ernest money and order the darn thing. I know my Honda dealership will order what ever I want. Toyota dosent want to build cars for custmers or dealer dosent want to order a car? The salesperson should be sucking cust. rump so hard they could put a hickey on a rock. I know its the port system right? LMAO

Sounds stupid to me. Just another reason to buy a Honda.

Get that tax credit by all means. I know I plan on doing it.

Hi Advance The Man:

___The 06 and beyond HCH will, the 03 and beyond Prius does, yes. These are options, not std. equipment. The HCH’s NAVI will be very similar to the one in the MDX. Even better in fact

___Good Luck
